Life in a Brazilian favela NC Assessment

why do people move to these Brazilian cities? People move away from the dry North East to the cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo . The result is overcrowding and cities with high population densities why do people move to these Brazilian cities?

What do favelas look like? Study the picture. Make a list of things that surprise you.

What is it like to live in a Favela? Task: Imagine you have just moved to Rio de Janeiro in the South East of Brazil. Write a short diary (300-400 words) about your first impressions on the life in Rocinha (one of Rio’s favelas). You need to include a sketch drawing of typical house in the favela with labels describing its features

Consider the following: The people (their jobs, community spirit, your new friends) The houses and amenities (where you live, what your house looks like, do you have access to modern facilities) The quality of the environment (cleanliness, noise pollution, graffiti etc…) Job opportunities (what is your job now, what do you aspire to do in the future) Why you might want to move to Barra (the new improved suburb in Rio)

NC Levels Level 4 You understand how people can both improve and damage the environment of the favela. You explain the views of the people living in the favelas. You use the evidence and information about the favelas gathered in lesson and for homework. Your account uses appropriate vocabulary linked to the favelas and Brazil.   Level 5 You explain the ways in which human activities cause changes to the environment of the favelas and the different views people about these changes. You explain the views of the people living in the favelas and recognise how people try to manage environments sustainably. You use and select the best information about the favelas gathered in lesson and for homework. You do not copy and paste. Your account uses appropriate vocabulary linked to the favelas and Brazil and uses illustrations (e.g a sketch of a house in the favela)
