North Thompson Sustainable Watershed Atlas North Thompson Sustainable Watershed Committee Fraser Basin Council

What is the North Thompson Sustainable Watershed Atlas? It is a website that allows digital maps from many sources to be brought together as a valley wide, “one stop shop” of mapping information It is online at www.cmnbc.ca It is in a very early stage of development The extent of the atlas is the watershed of the North Thompson River north of Kamloops

Who is involved in the North Thompson Atlas project? A partnership comprising: The North Thompson Sustainable Watershed Committee, the North Thompson Communities Foundation, the North Thompson Food Coalition, the Community Resource Centre for the North Thompson, the Community Mapping Network, the Fraser Basin Council, and the Kamloops South-Thompson Mapping and Capacity Partnership New partners are welcome!

Our Vision "Sharing information and resources to improve the capacity of decision makers within the context of achieving a healthy and sustainable life in the North Thompson Valley" Photo by Jill Hayward

Why build a web atlas for the North Thompson? Local governments, agencies, First Nations and individuals need improved capacity to support decision making for a sustainable community Web technology, digital information, and good collaborative relationships among potential partners are all in place It is a “One Stop Shop” for community users to easily access map information from a variety of internet sites Provides a site for local “made in the North Thompson” map layers to fill information gaps specific to the North Thompson area

Two Types of Map Layers Map layers from agencies and non-government organizations Bring map info from multiple agency servers to a common website Data remains with agency, atlas needs only a link on web Locally developed maps Local assets can be mapped using community volunteers Assets include social, environmental, cultural, economic and infrastructure values

Atlas Development – Progress to Date Partnerships formed Preliminary atlas online Funding proposals submitted Local asset mapping methodology developed using low cost tools

Web Atlas Development – Next Steps Form valley-wide Steering Committee similar to Food Coalition Identify Mapping Needs guided by Steering Committee Secure Funding

Web Atlas Development – Next Steps (Cont’d) Engage Project Coordinator from within valley Assemble volunteers and map valley assets Engage web contractors to complete first edition of online atlas
