What constitutes a good candidate? Look first at what the scholarship, fellowship, award or internship says about itself. What are they looking for? Generally: Top Academic Achievers Clear scholarly or project plans A history of leadership Outstanding recommendations

What is a Top Academic Achiever? As you’ve seen, a high GPA does count, but so does: intellectual focus active pursuit of and engagement with opportunities and mentors initiative and creativity critical thinking self-reflection

Clear Project Plans Rhodes Leadership trajectory where Oxford makes sense Marshall & Gates & Knight Hennessy & David-Weill Good fit with the academic program you propose Churchill Research lab or academic program fits your trajectory Schwarzman & Luce How does Asia fit into your career?

Recommendations An essential part of the package Choose carefully: The more the recommenders know, the better their letter will be Be sure to give them your transcript and personal statement Advice on our site: bit.ly/NCSrecommenders How many do I need?

Who are good recommenders? Faculty who know you well Faculty who can add credence Recent knowledge of your work In some cases, “character references” They can speak to something the scholarship is looking for… athletics, cultural engagement, leadership etc. These do not have to be faculty.

How do I ask? Email for an appointment Talk to them about the opportunities Give them a copy of your personal statement Appointment Unless recent experience – remind faculty who you are– send them a paper you wrote, resume– any thing to jog their memory What if they say no?

How do you get started? Do you want to go to graduate school? What is the next best place in the world to pursue your academic passion? See marshallscholarship.org/studyuk What is the right scholarship for you to get there?
