Iron Giants Safety

In the shop What Not to wear What must be worn Flammable Clothing Loose articles of clothing Jewelry No shorts Safety Glasses Closed Toe Shoes Long hair must be pulled back

Pre-use Inspection Inspect the cords for strains and damaged insulation Check Sharpness of Blades Make sure all guards are in place Check for trip hazards Check with a mentor before using any machines

Machine Safety

Welder Wear Welding Gloves Wear Welding Hood Make sure you have nonflammable clothing No skin Exposed Nothing flammable around you (paint, rags, etc.) Do not use without Mentor Supervision

Milling Machine Wear Safety Glasses Use Ear protection Keep hands away from the front of the mill If the mill jams, do NOT clear the jam, reach out to a mentor Immediately report all incidents to a mentor

Sander Requires Safety Glasses Make sure you have Mentor permission Report accidents immediately to a mentor

Lathe Wear Safety Glasses No gloves or long sleeves Take the T-bar out before use If the lathe stops working , do not try to fix it, reach out to a mentor Report all incidents immediately

Drill press Wear Safety Glasses Keep hands away from the drill If the drill jams, do not try to fix it, reach out to a mentor Report all accidents to a mentor immediately.

Chop Saws Wear Safety Glasses Wear hearing protection Do NOT reach across saw blade while cutting If saw jams, do not try to clear jam, reach out to a mentor Report all accidents to a Mentor

Table Saws Wear Safety Glasses Make sure blades are adjusted Be sure guards are in place Use push stick when necessary Never leave saw running unattended Keep hands and fingers clear of cutting path If there is an accident report it to a mentor

Band Saws Wear Safety Glasses Adjust guard height Lower the guard when you finish cutting Keep fingers clear of cutting path Never leave saw running unattended Report all accidents to a mentor immediately.

Remember Absolutely no woodworking in the metals shop and vise-versa If you don’t know how to use it, DON’T!!! No yelling and or Horseplay in the shop Phones should only be used in emergency situations. You need permission to use any machines ALL accidents must be reported IMMEDIATELY

In case of Battery Spill Neutralize the spill with baking soda If there is contact with skin, flush area immediately Seek medical treatment in accordance with the SDS sheets Put damaged battery in a container

Competition Safety Safety Glasses are required in pit Wear gloves when moving the robot Limit team access to the pit Keep aisles clear at all time Limit personal belongings in the pit Make sure robot is secured Use proper lifting procedures Make sure you are aware of your surroundings Wear appropriate clothing
