LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District Division of Instruction Derrick Supporting Academic Achievement for All Youth in Los Angeles and Neighboring Cities All Youth Achieving 333 South Beaudry Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90017

Computer Science Education in the Los Angeles Unified School District Computer Science Access for College and Career Readiness Computer Science Education in the Los Angeles Unified School District Derrick Introduce Erika Derrick Chau, Ph.D., Director of Secondary Instruction Erika Solorio, Computer Science Education & Blended Learning Coordinator Suyen Moncada-Machado, Specialist, Project Mobilize Grant

Erika Computer Science Affects Every Field Telecommunications, medicine, automotive, appliances, restaurant, space industry, social media (now an industry), education When we look around the work, computer science touches every facet of our lives, and people working in various different fields require proficiency and expertise in computer science

What is Computer Science? Creativity Abstraction and Problem Solving “Big” Data and Information Algorithms Programming/Coding The Internet Global Impact Erika Computer science is more than just programming We define a course as being “computer science” if it incorporates these concepts Reference experts – CSTA, College Board

Why Computer Science? Erika There is a huge demand for computer science from the public and parents in particular

Why Computer Science? Erika Career readiness requires that we prepare students with computer science curriculum The average salary for a computing occupation in CA is $105,622 (compared to average CA salary at $53,890). 67% of STEM Jobs are in Computing related fields

Why Computer Science? Advanced Placement Computer Science participation rates indicate severe inequities in ethnic and gender participation Erika In addition to the demand from the public and employers, we are seeing some severe inequities in participation from ethnic minorities and females. I’d like to introduce Andre Hargunani, principal from the Critical Design and Gaming School at Hawkins High School in South Los Angeles. He will share about his experience leading a new school that provides students with an opportunity to learn computer science.

De Blasio to Announce 10-Year Deadline to Offer Computer Science to All Students – New York Times, Sept. 15, 2015 Chicago Public Schools Making Computer Science Core Subject – Chicago Tribune, Dec. 10, 2013 Suyen Thank Principal Hargunani for sharing his perspective and valuable work I’d like to focus on how our district is approaching computer science implementation To begin, our district is not alone in making a commitment to preparing students in computer science Other large urban districts have already made commitments to integrate computer science into instruction for all students in their districts

Computer Science Course Offerings in LAUSD Exploring Computer Science Suyen LAUSD already has made significant investments in offering computer science courses to high school students On June 5, 2014, the Board of Education was provided an informative regarding computer science, particularly our partnership with Code.org, a nonprofit group that supports districts in implementing computer science curriculum. Since then, we have begin implementing these courses… But the implementation of computer science courses have been dependent on teacher and schools volunteering to offer these courses Our partnership with Code.org has provided free professional development for teachers to implement the ECS and CS Principles courses, and our Mobilize grant with UCLA has helped LAUSD develop the IDS course that is a high school third year math course focused on statistics and data analysis (Advanced Placement Beginning 2016-2017)

Enrollment by Local District A-G CS Course High School Student Enrollment by Local District Central: 942 / 25,743 = 3.7% East: 1,386 / 30,520 = 4.5% Northeast: 1,159 / 24,174 = 4.8% Northwest: 573 / 20,437 = 2.8% South: 736 / 21,977 = 3.3% Suyen To date, less than 5% of high school students are enrolled in computer science courses Northeast and East have the highest enrollment South and West have the lowest enrollments West: 607 / 20,437 = 3.0%

Northeast: 12 High Schools Computer Science Courses by Northwest: 10 High Schools Central: 12 High Schools West: 11 High Schools East: 16 High Schools Suyen Because implementation of the computer science courses has been voluntary, we see that the number of high schools that have offered computer science courses is not evenly distributed across the district Only 70 of our 98 senior high schools offer computer science courses This leads to serious concerns about equity and access for all students There are high school students in this district who do not have the opportunity to even take a computer science course I’d like to now introduce Leslie Hicks, a computer science teacher at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, who will share about her experiences and the experiences of students in learning computer science Number of High Schools Offering A-G Computer Science Courses by Local District South: 9 High Schools

Vision for Computer Science in LAUSD Given that students’ knowledge and skills in computer science are becoming critical for college and career success… The Los Angeles Unified School District is committed to providing all students in grades TK-12 with access to computer science curriculum and instruction by 2020. Derrick Thank you Leslie for sharing your experiences and thank you for your work in preparing our students for college and career readiness We in the Division of Instruction would like to share a vision for our district around Computer Science. 12

LAUSD Computer Science Next Steps Ensure equity and access for all LAUSD students Implement curriculum beginning with high school and expanding to the lower grades Fund Division of Instruction personnel, curriculum development and teacher training Sustain and foster partnerships Derrick As a team, we have drafted a strategic plan that address the equity and access issues within LAUSD and provides a roadmap for how we can ensure that all students TK-12 have access to this vital curriculum. We will be seeking your support and the support from outside partners in funding personnel, curriculum development and teacher training around computer science.
