Localise West Midlands 4th November 2013 Healthier and wealthier? Community Economic Development and Public Health Localise West Midlands 4th November 2013

Localise West Midlands Localise West Midlands  promotes local supply chains, money flow, ownership and decision-making for a more just and sustainable economy. We are a think-tank, campaign group and consultancy. (Sustainable in BOTH ways)

Community Economic Development and Public Health What is “Community Economic Development”? Why is it important? What is the relationship with Public Health? A brief example – “Right Care, Right Here”.

What is CED? One idea – two outcomes. Economic development at a community level. Community development with the local economy as the driver.

What is CED? Localise West Midlands “We define community economic development (CED) as economic development led by people within the community and based on local knowledge and local action, with the aim of creating economic opportunities and better social conditions locally.”

What is CED? So fixed in principal but flexible in practice. May include:- Small localised businesses. Local procurement. Local supply chains. Local employment. Social Enterprise/CIC. Micro finance. Credit union/social investment. Local ownership/local solutions.

Why is CED important? A (very) simplistic example………. You could buy jam from Belgium or…

(and they are ALL health) Why is CED important? So if you buy your jam locally… Economic Social Personal Environmental (and they are ALL health)

What is the relationship with between CED and Public Health? In terms of the Health sector - “Friends and Neighbours” Health Sector Economic Provider Business Outcomes Health Promoter Economic Driver

A brief example – “Right Care, Right Here”. The proposed new hospital:- Housing Jobs Supply chain Active travel Healthy eating Community sector

Conclusion Big regeneration is over…(And did it even work?) It is now about maximising every asset and maximising every outcome. We are all regeneration, we are all economic development, we are all health.. Health is an asset that can drive the economy. The economy is an asset that can drive health.
