Presentation transcript:

Father of the World Wide Web Tim Berners-Lee The Legacy of the WWW Berners-Lee was determined to make the World Wide Web free and accessible to the world, and in 1994 founded the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C, at MIT in cooperation with a number of companies to create standards which the World Wide Web would live by. The W3C creates specifications, guidelines and tools to further develop the Web that we know today. Father of the World Wide Web “Anyone who has lost track of time when using a computer knows the propensity to dream, the urge to make dreams come true and the tendency to miss lunch.” – Tim Berners-Lee. A History In 1980, while working at the CERN research center, Berners-Lee proposed the idea of a global system which used hypertext to allow researchers anywhere to share and update data. To demonstrate this idea, he built the ENQUIRE system. By 1989, Berners-Lee had developed this idea enough to publish a paper called ‘Information Management: A Proposal’, in which he brought together the ideas of hypertext and the Internet to allow for the global sharing of information. Impressed by this, his manager encouraged him to develop his idea on a recently acquired NeXT workstation. What would this project be called? The World Wide Web. After creating his new Web, he created the first website, which contained instructions on how to use a browser and build a server. The Web For All Since his work with both the development of WWW and heading the W3C, Berners-Lee has continued to spearhead the movement for making the web available. In 2009, he established the World Wide Web Foundation, with three key goals in mind. To expand access to the web for some 60% of earth that still doesn’t have it, to ensure that the web serves the people rather than governments or corporations and that everyone’s voice can be heard, and to make knowledge freely accessible to all online. The world’s first Web server!
