A New Deal for Community David Malcolm and Colum McGuire

Session objectives: To understand the ten asks within the New Deal for Community strand To discuss how these might play out within your students’ unions and institutions To consider what NUS can do to support you in these areas

A New Deal for Community: Focus We want students to be empowered as active citizens within their communities and able to access and influence the services they need to thrive Made up of ten areas for campaigning

A new deal for our right to campaign We are calling on political parties to repeal the Lobbying Act and to strengthen protections for citizens who want to engage in peaceful protest so that nobody ever has to be afraid of speaking up.

A new deal for keeping promises We want political parties to commit to making proper provisions for elected representatives to be kicked out of office when the people who put them there believe they have not lived up to their promises.

A new deal for votes at 16 We want political parties to show they care what young people think by committing to lowering the voting age to 16.

A new deal for youth services We want local authorities to be given a statutory requirement and adequate funding to provide local youth services.

A new deal for citizenship education We want schools and colleges to be required by law to provide adequate citizenship and sex and relationships education.

A new deal for student health We want the next government to reverse the NHS Bill, go back to the drawing board, and ensure that we have a National Health Service that is public, accountable and fit for purpose for the next century and beyond.

A new deal for youth transport We want the next government to grant free bus travel for all 16 to 19 year olds to ensure that no young person is prevented from taking up an opportunity due to transport costs.

A new deal for proportionate policing We want government to remove random stop-and-search powers from the police.

A new deal for student renters We want government to scrap letting agent fees so that students are clear on the costs of renting from the beginning, and are able to spread their costs across the year.

A new deal for global mobility We want political parties to put an end to playing politics with our world-leading education system and scrap the use of arbitrary net migration targets.

Group work Group 1: Group 4: Right to campaign Youth transport Keeping promises Proportionate policing Group 2: Group 5: Votes at 16 Student renters Youth services Global mobility Group 3: Citizenship education Student health Global mobility

Key questions to consider How is this issue relevant to your members? How might it resonate with your local community and prospective parliamentarians? What activities and support from NUS would be useful in this area?
