Brain Starter: February 28th Review: Why was excommunication such a feared punishment of the Church? What other problems were occurring inside the Catholic Church? (at this point in history, there was only the Catholic Church. Other denominations did not exist.) Why was it scary to speak out against the pope? 4. What does this quote mean? (it is from Desiderius Erasmus) “…how stoutly they fight for their right to tithes (1/10 of income from church members), with sword, spear, stones, with every imaginable armed force.”
