Definitions “Certified Member” means a committee member who is certified under section 7.6 of the OHS Act “Health and Safety Representative” means a health and safety representative selected under the Act “HR-OHS” means Human Resources Specialist – Occupational Health and Safety “Ministry of Labour” (MOL) is responsible for monitoring health and safety issues in the workplace, to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. The MOL has the authority to enforce the law. April 2016

Critical Injury Definition of Critical Injury – Regulation 834 09/05/2018 Critical Injury Definition of Critical Injury – Regulation 834 For the purposes of the Act and the Regulations, "critically injured" means an injury of a serious nature that: a. places life in jeopardy; b. produces unconsciousness; c. results in a substantial loss of blood; d. involves the fracture of a leg or an arm but not a finger or a toe; e. involves the amputation of a leg, arm, hand or foot but not a finger or a toe; f. consists of burns to a major portion of the body; or g. causes the loss of sight in an eye. Critical Injury OHS Act Section 51 (2) 09/05/2018 Critical Injury OHS Act Section 51 (2) Where a worker is killed or critically injured from any cause at a workplace, no person shall, except for the purpose of: 1) saving life or relieving human suffering 2) maintaining an essential public utility service or a public transportation system or 3) preventing unnecessary damage to equipment or other property. interfere with, disturb, destroy, alter or carry away any wreckage, article or thing at the scene of or connected with the occurrence until permission to do so has been given by a Ministry of Labour Inspector. All critical injures to any person in the workplace must be reported IMMEDIATELY to the HR - OHS at 1-877-741-4577 extension 2219. MAKE SURE TO SECURE THE SCENE! Scenes of Critical Injury may require investigation by the MOL. The MOL will inform the School board if an investigation is required. A Joint Health and Safety Committee worker member or health and safety representative should be available to participate in the investigation along with the management representatives. 09/05/2018 Critical Injury A Critical Injury must be reported immediately to your supervisor and HR Specialist – Occupational Health and Safety @ 1-877-741-4577 ext. 2219. Report the incident even if you are unsure whether or not the injury/accident is classified as a critical injury. Following a Critical Injury: Get medical help for the injured person Cordon off the area and do not disturb the scene Contact the Education Centre (as above) and advise of the emergency. For critical injury reporting, if contact is not reached through extension 2219, call the department manager at extension 2249. DO NOT FORGET TO SECURE THE SCENE! A secured scene can not be released unless the MOL authorizes its release. April 2016 Health and Safety Training 2016

Critical Injury Investigation 09/05/2018 Critical Injury Investigation Often following a critical injury the MOL will conduct an investigation. The MOL may visit the site immediately or at some later time as specified by them. Following an investigation the MOL may issue an Order. Compliance with MOL Orders are mandatory. Not all critical injuries trigger investigations (ex: injuries from slipping on the ice usually does not trigger an investigation). Notification to the appropriate unions will be issued if an investigation will be conducted. April 2016 Health and Safety Training 2016

09/05/2018 Injury Reporting All staff injuries must be reported via the injury reporting line. @ 1-877-741-4577 ext. 3333. It is important to report your injury within 24 hour of sustaining the injury to both the injury reporting line and to your supervisor. April 2016 Health and Safety Training 2016

Other Emergency Reporting 09/05/2018 Other Emergency Reporting In the Custodial Services Manual emergency reporting is outlined. All staff should be aware of when and where to call in the case of other types of emergencies such as: Building Fires Natural Gas Odors Sewage Emergencies Roof Leaks Major Electrical Outage Vandalism at the school Exterior Door/Lock Malfunction Malfunction of the Master Clock All emergency situations must be reported to your immediate supervisor. Verify with your supervisor if a particular incident requires an emergency call. April 2016 Health and Safety Training 2016

Injury Flow Chart For the Injured Worker 09/05/2018 Injury Flow Chart For the Injured Worker All injures must be reported within 24 hours of the event to the Staff Injury Report Line: 1-877-741-4577 ext. 3333 You are injured at work If the injured worker is unable to call, the Principal, Supervisor or Manager must call in the injury to the Staff Injury Report Line. Additional emergency medical response may also be required. Is the injury a critical injury? YES NO The injured worker will be contacted by the HR Specialist/WSIB to complete the necessary paperwork for WSIB and safe return to work or rehabilitation as necessary. Call the HR Specialist – OHS representative to report all Critical Injuries at 1-877-741-4577 ext. 2219.
