Chapter 1: Looking at the Earth Section 1: The Five Themes of Geography

The Five Themes Location Place Region Movement Human-Environment Interaction

Location Asks: Two ways to answer: Where is it? Absolute location: exact place on earth where a geographic feature is found Relative location: describes a place in comparison to other places around it

Location Absolute Location Relative Location Latitude & Longitude Equator Prime Meridian Relative Location Ex: Mrs. Williams’ classroom is two doors down from Mr. O’Malley’s room

Place Asks: What is it like? Include physical features and cultural characteristics of a location What are some physical features of downtown Dallas? What are some cultural characteristics of Texas?

Region Asks: Three ways: formal, functional, & perceptual regions How are places similar or different? Three ways: formal, functional, & perceptual regions Formal: Limited number of related characteristics Ex: Latin America & East Asia

Region Functional: Perceptual: Organized around a set of interactions and connections between places Ex: a city & its suburbs Perceptual: A region in which people perceive the characteristics of the region in the same way

Movement Asks: Look at the tag on your shirt. Where was it made? How do people, goods, and ideas move from one location to another? Look at the tag on your shirt. Where was it made? Analyze movement in three ways: Linear distance Time distance Psychological distance

Movement Linear: Time: How far across the earth something travels? How can physical geography affect linear distance? Time: Amount of time it takes for something to travel? How has technology affected this?

Movement Psychological: Refers to the way people view distance How has your age affected the way you see distance?

Human-Environment Interaction Asks: How do people relate to the physical world? People learn to use what the environment offers them & to change that environment to meet their needs What are some examples of how we change our environment? What about how the environment changes us?
