*Volunteer and Visitor Policy You must register as a CMS volunteer at: https://www.cmsvolunteers.com/ You will receive an email that confirms you as a volunteer. If you are from out of state it will take longer to run a background check. Go ahead and register any family member that may come to the school. Even lunch visitors must be approved. This is for the safety of your children. We appreciate your support!

*Change of transportation These must be in done writing – email or note from home. There is no riding a bus for a student who does not normally go home that way.

Language Arts and Math We will continue to use the Common Core State Standards along with 44 other states! You can review them at http://www.corestandards.org/ There is also an app for your iPad or iPhone that will show you the standards. These standards guide us for writing and grammar as well. In math we cover numbers and operations, multiplication & division, fractions, geometry, measurement and Data, and algebraic thinking.

Math This year CMS has adopted a new math program Envision Math. It focuses on problem solving and application of critical thinking skills.

*Science and Social Studies We are using the “The Essential Standards” http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/acre/standards/new -standards/ The district has provided us with pacing guides and curriculum guides as tools as we learn to implement these new standards. We will have a few projects that deal with the units we study.

Social Studies and Science Social Studies Focus: Science Units Citizens and Government Matter Communities Over Time Energy Geography Earth, Moon, and Sun People and Economics Forces and Motion People and Technology Earth Systems People Shape Communities Skeletal/Muscular Systems

*Homework Procedures & Policies Reading 20 min per night, recorded and signed in planner. Nightly math homework will be assigned to reinforce what was learned in class that day. Homework should take no more than 30 minutes to complete. Also, their weekly spelling assignment will be given on Mondays and is due on Friday of that week. All homework should be written in agendas each night! Studying for tests, research projects, etc. will be given but each student will have class time to work on them. The due dates will be communicated through email (newsletters sent on Fridays), agendas, etc.

Resources to Help at Home (and how to use them) Math: www.learnzillion.com and Envisions math videos Literacy: www.learninga-z.com

Projects: Grade 3 Projects that support the standards will be assigned throughout the year. Each project will have directions and rubrics to go with them. Students will be given at least 2 weeks to complete the project.

*CMS Grading Scale 3-5 A: 90-100 Excellent B: 80-89 Very Good C: 70-79 Satisfactory D: 60-69 Low Performance F: Below 60 Failing

*CMS Elementary Grading Procedures Class work/informal assessments (warm-ups, notebook checks, quizzes, group work, in-class tasks, homework, and class participation ) = 40% of quarter grade Formal assessments (tests, comprehensive writing assignments, and projects) = 60% quarter grade

*Parent Portal on PowerSchool Parent Portal is a computer-access program that helps parents track their children’s progress in school. New NC system for attendance and grades https://cms.powerschool.com/public/ You can access it from the CMS Website under the Parent Tab You should have received your login information last week in the Home/School folder. More info coming!! 

Testing: CMS & EOG CMS will have local common assessments – They do not count for the children in any way. They are a resource for the school, teachers and county. They are called MAP tests and are given on the computer. We will also be giving Dibels assessments to see their reading levels. We will use the results to determine their corresponding guided reading letter (A-Z). BOGs were given earlier this month. Students will take a Math and Language Arts assessment. Please do not schedule trips during this time.

What is the MAP test? Measures of Academic Progress Computerized, diagnostic assessment of math and reading administered 3 times/year To help us know what skills and concepts in reading and math that students know and what they need to learn. The difficulty of the test adjusts based on how students answer the questions. No two tests are the same. An individualized test is built for every student.

Third Grade Benchmarks and Read to Achieve EOG Levels 3, 4, or 5 Dibels Level P and above MAP Score 207 and above

*Recess We go outside unless it is under 40 degrees. (Teacher decision) Indoor recess – Mr. Mark, games, we try to stay active during this time. Wear tennis shoes – we run 3 laps daily. We will go to ZONED recess if behavior becomes a major issue.

*Parent Teacher Conferences Be sure to give us your email address. This year we will be using Sign Up Genius for parent teacher conferences. More information coming later

Field Trips Stay tuned for more details as they are still being planned

*THANK YOU!!  Thank you SO much for coming tonight and being a part of your child’s education. We are always available to help in any way we can! Please feel free to let me know of any questions or concerns you may have. If you have a question tonight, please write it down on an index card with your email address or phone number and we will get back to you with an answer ASAP.
