Five Themes of Geography Chapter 1

What is Geography? Geography is the study of Earth and its people Greek word for writing Greek word for Earth

Geography Quick Facts How many continents are there? There are seven continents: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. Which continent do we live on? We live in North America. Predict or guess what continents the ancient civilizations we are going to study will be on? We will be studying about ancient civilizations on the continents of Africa, Asia, and Europe

Important Vocabulary to know Landform= naturally formed feature on Earth’s surface For example, islands, mountains, plains and plateaus are landforms.

Where is it? Location can identify a precise spot or tell where one place is in relation to another.

The Redlands Mall is located near the 10 freeway on Redlands Blvd and Orange Street

What is it like there? Place describes physical characteristics, language, religion, and politics.

The Hawaiian islands are a place where the beaches are beautiful The Hawaiian islands are a place where the beaches are beautiful. The native Hawaiian people speak Hawaiian and English. Hawaii is part of the United States.

How are places similar or different? Region compares physical and human characteristics.

Seattle, Washington The Pacific Northwest is a region famous for its trees, rainfall, and outdoor lifestyle.

How do people, goods, and ideas move from one place to another? Movement spreads people, goods, and ideas from one place to another

These immigrants are moving from Europe to the United States These immigrants are moving from Europe to the United States. They bring with them their ideas, religion, food, and language.

How do people relate to the physical world? Human-environment interaction is how people learn to use and change what the environment has to offer.
