Dyslexia Awareness Week

This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week (7-11th of November)

What do you already know about dyslexia?

My Dyslexic Mind ? We are going to watch a short documentary about dyslexia My Dyslexic Mind

Ben Zac Khayala

Discussion Questions Is dyslexia the same for everyone? What techniques do some people with dyslexia use to help them? Dom and Zac both think that Dyslexia has helped them. What do they mean by that?

Did you know? Some dyslexic pupils struggle with spelling. One technique that can be used to help with spelling is a mnemonic. Have you heard this word before?

Mnemonic means a system of letters used to help people to remember things. For example ROYGBIV is a good way to remember the colours in the spectrum: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet

This mnemonic has been used by a pupil to remember how to spell BECAUSE. Do you know any others?

TASK In your pairs, make a mind map of difficult to spell words that you have already used in class (don’t worry about spelling for now!)

YOUR CHALLENGE Double check the spelling of one of your hard to spell words and make up an imaginative mnemonic. The best mnemonic in S1 will win a prize. You can give your entry to your English teacher.
