Results of the Protestant Reformation: Protestant Churches begin to flourish One religion no longer unites Europe Catholic Church’s power is diminished, esp. the Pope More countries become secular (separate church/state) Catholic Church knows it needs changes! Catholic Church Action Reason for their action Council of Cardinals investigate the selling of indulgences and other abuses. Council of Trent Clarify Catholic beliefs & change some practices. Order of Jesuits established schools and missionary work (conversion).

Results of Catholic Reformation Selling of indulgences is banned (new) Church & Bible were equal in a Catholic life (new) Church’s interpretation of Bible is final (same) Catholics need both faith and good deeds for salvation (same) Inquisition started to punish those who broke new rules/non believers 6. Books dangerous to church put in Index of Forbidden Books & burned!
