What is it???? When did it happen???? Vigorous reform movement within the Catholic Church. When did it happen???? 1530s-1540s What happened???? Pope set out to revive moral authority of the Catholic Church Appointed reformers to end corruption

Council of Trent: 1545 Council established to direct reform Reaffirmed traditional Catholic views Salvation comes through faith and good works Bible is major source but not only source of religious truth Steps to end church abuses Provided stiff penalties for worldliness and corruption Established schools to create better-educated clergy

The Inquisition Court set up during the Middle Ages to root out HERESY Pope Paul strengthens Inquisition to fight Protestantism Created list of books too immoral or irreligious for Catholics to read

The Jesuits -Ignatius of Loyola Strict program of spiritual and moral discipline Goal: Defend and spread Catholic faith Jesuits became advisors to Catholic rulers to help combat heresy Missionaries spread the Catholic faith to far away lands

Teresa of Avila Est. her own order of nuns; very strict practice Lived in Isolation, eating & sleeping very little; dedicated themselves fully to the faith Canonized by the Church

Legacy of the Catholic Reformation Majority of Europe remain Catholic Achieved some conversion – from Protestant back to Catholic Charity flourished & church abuses reduced Protestantism gained strong foothold on continent Religious conflict still plays part in Europe
