Figure 1 Airway pressure (Paw) changes and concomitant changes in total impedance. Journal of the Formosan Medical Association 2016 115, 195-202DOI: (10.1016/j.jfma.2015.03.001) Copyright © 2015 Terms and Conditions

Figure 2 Changes in distribution of regional lung impedance during the recordings. The electrical impedance tomography image consists of 32 pixels × 32 pixels. Pixels with high impedance changes are displayed in white and pixels with low impedance changes are displayed in blue. These images were obtained at the end of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) at baseline (PEEPB), low PEEP (PEEPL), and high PEEP (PEEPH). From PEEPB to PEEPL, the ventilation tended to increase in the ventral region. From PEEPL to PEEPH, the ventilation tended to increase in the dorsal region. Figure 3 Changes in PaO2/fraction of inspired oxygen (P/F) ratio and end-expiratory lung impedance (ΔEELI) with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) level. For the P/F ratio, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) between high PEEP (PEEPH) and low PEEP (PEEPL), PEEP at baseline (PEEPB) and PEEPL30, PEEPB and PEEPH30 and PEEPH60. A significant difference (p < 0.05) was also found between PEEPH5 and PEEPH60. For ΔEELI, there were significant differences between PEEPH and PEEPL, PEEPB and PEEPL, and PEEPB and PEEPH. There was also a significant difference (p < 0.05) between PEEPH5 and PEEPH60. Figure 4 Regional lung ventilation distribution with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) level. Ventilation shifted to the dorsal area with increasing PEEP. There were significant differences (all p < 0.05) in regional lung ventilation (Zones 1–4) between PEEP at baseline (PEEPB) and low PEEP (PEEPL), PEEPB and high PEEP (PEEPH), and PEEPH and PEEPL. There were no significant differences among individual PEEP levels (within PEEPH or PEEPL). Figure 5 Regional end-expiratory lung impedance change (ΔEELI) with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) level. There were significant differences in tidal ΔEELI between PEEP at baseline (PEEPB) and PEEPH, PEEPB and low PEEP (PEEPL), and high PEEP (PEEPH) and PEEPL. However, no differences were found in ΔEELI between individual PEEP levels (within PEEPL or PEEPH).
