The Miracles of Jesus in John’s Gospel Introduction

John 20:30-31 (KJV) And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Objections We don’t have miracles since we have the completed Word The age of miracles has passed I don’t believe in modern-day miracle workers

Definition “what a miracle is not” When God Intervenes in the World A miracle is nothing more than a natural law not discovered “Coincidence” is a miracle where God chooses to remain anonymous

Definition “what a miracle is” It is an act of a supernatural being It is a significant event with a definite purpose It is when God does something unusual in this world

Definition expanded A miracle is an unusual and significant event (terasa) which requires the working of a supernatural agent (dunamis) and is performed for the purpose of authenticating the message or the messenger (semeion).

Interpretation What was the meaning for those who witnessed the miracle What was the meaning for the disciples What was the meaning for the person on whom the miracle was performed What does it mean to us today

Glorification (John 1:1-3) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.

Glorification (John 1:11-14) He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
