SUSAN B. ANTHONY 1820 – 1906 Born in Massachusetts Teacher and well-educated Strong-minded Followed Quaker traditions Became the voice of Women’s Rights

Issues Advocated for abolishment of slavery and alcohol. Questioned the undermining of women’s rights as US citizens and the right to vote. Decided to take a stand by registering and casting an ‘illegal’ vote in 1872. Her speech paved a way for Women’s Suffrage.

Results Arrested for voting. Gave passionate speeches to further the cause of women’s rights. The court found her guilty and had to pay a fine (she never paid for it). Died before she saw the full female enfranchisement 19th Amendment was added to the Constitution in 1920.

19th Amendment Drafted and proposed by Susan B. Anthony to Congress. Prohibits any US citizen to be denied to vote based on sex. The Amendment was proposed to the states June 4, 1919. The majority of states accepted the new law. August 18, 1920 all states accepted the new law.

Women’s Suffrage 15th Amendment (1870) gave black men the right to vote. President Woodrow Wilson did not agree to allow women the right to vote until 1918. The purpose of the movement was to enfranchise women. 1920 was the year when women was fully given the right to vote.

World War I 1914 – 1918 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Threats and military mobilization escalated on all sides of Europe. Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Japan (allied powers) fought against Germany, Austria- Hungry, and Ottoman Empire (central powers). Established League of Nations.

First World War and the U.S. Europe became politically unstable and countries began to join forces in 1914. The U.S. remained neutral and not involved in Europe. Wilson won his second term as president because he kept the U.S. out of Europe in 1916. U.S. involvement in Europe becomes inevitable.

Declaration of War, 1917 Germans sunk SS Lusitania (British ship) that killed 128 Americans. Germans planned unrestricted submarine warfare ---U.S. supplied its allies and would be in the line of fire. The American ship Housatonic was sunk off the Italian coast and this action prompted war.

Franklin D. Roosevelt 1882 – 1945 Born in New York 32nd U.S. President 4-term president U.S. entered WWII

World War II 1939 – 1945, Germany invades Poland. Adolf Hitler leads the Nazi Party and implements a totalitarian rule. Global War: Allies vs. Axis. U.S. stayed out of the war until further provocation. Nearly 5 million Jews died.

Invasion of Japan U.S. grew weary of eastern expansion from Japan, but didn’t really anticipate war. Surprise attack from Japan in December 7, 1941. Two waves of attack planes. Killed 2,403, destroyed 188 planes, and damaged 8 battleships. U.S. enters the war.

Abraham Lincoln Born 1809 in Kentucky. Assassinated 14th of April, 1865. 16th President of the U.S. Mostly self-educated. President during the Civil War.

Slavery First slaves arrived in Virginia in 1615. Families were separated during the slave trade. Prohibited to be educated and therefore could not read or write. Worked mostly in the cotton fields and as servants to white people. Abraham Lincoln fought against slavery in America.

The Civil War 1861 – 1865 Lincoln became the 16th president in 1860. 7 states broke away from the union because of Lincoln’s support of freeing the slaves. War between the North and South (confederate). Attack on Fort Sumter in 1861 started the war.
