Dealing With Temptation

Minneapolis MN August 7,2007 The I-35W Mississippi River bridge (officially known as Bridge 9340) was an eight-lane, steel truss arch bridge that carried Interstate 35W across the Saint Anthony Falls of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.******* During the evening rush hour on August 1, 2007, it suddenly collapsed, killing 13 people and injuring 145. The bridge was Minnesota's third busiest,[4][5] carrying 140,000 vehicles daily.[3] The NTSB cited a design flaw as the likely cause of the collapse, noting that a too-thin gusset plate ripped along a line of rivets, and asserted that additional weight on the bridge at the time of the collapse contributed to the catastrophic failure

Dealing With Temptation Had they never tested the material? Had the bridge never been inspected? What other factors influenced the collapse? How could the collapse have been prevented?

Dealing With Temptation What happened that day in Minnesota is not unlike what happens in our lives on a regular basis.

Temptation To Sin The problem is … I get my finger caught when I take the cheese

Temptation To Sin What about “Sin”? It is sinful Full, get it? There is no such thing as a little sin! The wages of Sin is Death! Meanwhile we must deal with the consequences of sin which vary in magnitude. Some sins have small immediate consequence, others have huge issues. Eg. White lie, penalty=death Immediate consequence, tiny blip on a heart monitor, but a blip non the less. Murder, the death penalty or life in prison/no parole

Foundational Sins Pride Rebellion Unbelief All other sins flow from these “foundations” These have the biggest consequences

Temptation To Sin Sin is fun, pleasurable

Temptation To Sin Stephen Cole “Sin snags us by making life more enjoyable at first, but the consequences always catch up to us.” Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that the fallen human heart is more deceitful than all else. We are very prone to deception WE are very prone to deception

Sequence of Temptation (1) Wrong thinking (2) Wrong feelings. (3) Wrong actions (4) Wrong company {including your computer, phone, etc (5) More wrong actions (6) Seared conscience (7) Romans 1 God turns you over to your sin

Temptation To Sin Temptation comes from the lure of our own evil desires. These evil desires lead to evil actions, and evil actions lead to death. So don’t be deceived my dear brothers and sisters” (James 1:12-16).

Susie Hawkins “ You can’t stop the devil from singing his bewitching songs in your ear but you don’t have to join him and sing a duet. You can’t stop the devil from displaying his wares in the shop window and urging you to buy but you don’t have to make a purchase. You can’t stop the devil from dropping his brats on your doorstep and beating incessantly on your door but you don’t have to open the door, take them in, warm them, clothe them and feed them.”

What Is She Saying? We do NOT have to yield to the temptations!!! “It is important to note here that temptation in itself is not a sin” Jesus “faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin.” Hebrews 4:15

So How Do We Overcome? Hebrews 4:14-16 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

So How Do We Overcome? The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Cor. 10:13

Testing Methods

Testing Methods Next slide is Broken machine. The steel didn’t break, it stood the test. The test was too much for the machine. YET WITHOUT SIN

He Broke The Machine!

“for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.” And I can depend on the same Holy Spirit to empower me through the test.

Steps to Overcome Temptation Memorize Scripture Psalms 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart, so that I might not sin against you. 133 Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil. Casting ALL your cares 1 Peter 5:7 Pray, that you will not give in to temptation Luke 22:40 22:46 Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. Fear only the LORD 1 Samuel 15:24 Be filled with the Holy Spirit like Jesus Hebrews 4:14-16
