Global Misdistribution of Health Workers Here we have the map of the 57 countries with critical shortages Contributing to these shortages is the pressured pipeline where too few are produced and those that are produced emigrate elsewhere In SSA there are 145k MDs for 821 million people vs. 2.8 million MDs in Europe Another way of looking at the same problem. Overall, sub-Saharan Africa has a physician-to-population ratio of 18 per 100 000, compared with countries such as India (60 per 100000), Brazil (170 per 100 000) and 250 per 100,000 for the US, France(370 per 100 000). Africa’s poorest countries have even greater physician shortages

“ How many of you, who are going to be doctors, are willing to spend your days in Ghana?” –John F. Kennedy, 1960 Kennedy…

The History of an Idea Review the history [pick and choose]: October 14, 1960 President Kennedy spoke to students at University of Michigan. About 2 am. He asks “How many of you who are going to be doctors are willing to spend your days in Ghana? Technicians or engineers, how many of you are willing to work in the Foreign Service?… I think Americans are willing to contribute. But the effort must be far greater than we have ever made in the past “ 1979 – Proposed International health Act of 1979 which directed the Secretary to establish within the Public Health Service 1) international Health Fellowships, 2) International Health Service, 3) Programs to support international health centers and international health programs in US academic institutions
