Prototyping and Testing of an Economizer in a Gas Cycled Chiller System Team 4 Members: Steven Hutto Breck Dorsey Kenneth Martin Brandon Van Guoxin Wang Sponsor: Dr. Salvador Quitaleg Advisor: Dr. Shangchao Lin Project Scope Design Future Work The project will consist of prototyping and testing of an economizer in a gas cycled chiller system. And we selected the flash tank economizer instead of heat exchanger type. Complete design finalization Create detailed design documentation on the final design Prototyping plan and review Order components needed for parts and assembly Strength and endurance test on both tanks Begin Fabrication of tank Implement into gas cycle and test efficiency gains Background 1.A large percentage of energy consumption stems from the need of cooling 2. Danfoss Turbocor is dedicated to the design, manufacture, marketing and support of the world's most efficient commercial refrigerant compressors 3.Flash Tank Economizer as a separation chamber 4.Economizers implemented into Danfoss’s R&D test rig Acknowledgements Project Constraints Potential Challenges Everyone in team 4 would like to thank Dr. Gupta and Dr. Shih for their support and generosity in teaching the class. We would also like to thank Dr. Salvador Quitaleg our sponsor, for bringing this project to fruition and analyzing our marketability every step of the way. Lastly we would like to thank Dr. Lin for advising us on the best course of action to take in order to accomplish our project. Must ve implemented into Danfoss's current gas cycled test rig using a flash tank design rather than a heat exchanger design Total budget of $10,000 Must improve the overall efficiency of the system Must have control system to avoid malfunction or damage to compressors. CAD construction of overall design Cost evaluation for design Material and component acquisition Compatibility of systems/assembly Control system testing
