The Progressive Era

President Roosevelt After McKinley's assassination, Teddy Roosevelt became the youngest president to ever serve at the age of 42 He was as energetic as ever and brought that energy to the presidency Teddy believed that the government should be a mediator for conflicts in order to bring order to American society

Trust Buster What is a trust? Roosevelt became known as a trust buster for his work at eliminating the trusts that ran the country He enforced the Sherman Anti-Trust Act that made trusts illegal

Teddy the Hunter and Conservationist Teddy Roosevelt was an avid hunter He was also very concerned with the preservation of nature While he was president, he created the Antiquities Act which protected national parks and monuments He created 5 national parks, and 18 national monuments including the Grand Canyon He also set aside bird sanctuaries, game refuges, and over 100 million acres of national forests

Conservationists Conservation was an early movement to try to protect nature It was about conserving or saving what nature America already had The railroads and lumber industry were deforesting huge portions of the west

John Muir Born in Scotland, his family moved to Wisconsin when he was young He studied botany and geology and hiked all across the Westcoast He loved nature and believed that God was revealed through it Muir was a huge advocate for protecting the Petrified Forest, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and other natural wonders He went camping with Teddy Roosevelt and convinced him to protect Yosemite Valley

Muir Woods

Gifford Pinchot Similar upbringing to Teddy Roosevelt Pinchot’s father encouraged him to take up forestry but there was no forestry school in America He went to France to learn Roosevelt named him chief of the division of Forestry Founder of the Forest Service and the forestry schools in America

Gifford Pinchot "Without natural resources life itself is impossible.”

Passenger Pigeon They were once the most numerous bird species in the Americas and maybe the world Their flocks could be as large as about 130 million When the flocks passed overhead, they blotted out the sun and it would take hours for the whole flock to pass Men would just shoot into the sky and hit something They were killed faster than they could reproduce so the flocks dwindled until they disappeared entirely The last of the passenger Pigeons died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914

Ladies Hats Women during this time period also like to wear birds on their hats Many species were almost decimated because of this practice

Social Reform Group projects: You will need to include in your presentation: the problem the people or actions taken to help solve the problem the impact this reform had on American society All group members will be a part of the class presentation.
