5/9/2018 Modern Approaches to Management 5/9/2018

Management by Objectives MME Management by Objectives MBO (Management by Objectives) - Effectiveness is the foundation of organizational success - Actual attainment of organizational goals - Peter Drucker (1986) - MBO is a process of agreeing upon objectives within an organization so that management and employees agree to the objectives and understand what they are in the organization. 5/9/2018

Leadership Leadership MME Leadership Leadership - The process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group in efforts toward goal achievement in a given situation - Trait theory: Trait theory tries to describe the personality tendencies associated with effective leadership. 5/9/2018

Leadership Leadership MME Leadership Leadership - Behavioral theory: Theorists began to research leadership as a set of behaviors, evaluating the behavior of “successful” leaders, determining a behavior taxonomy and identifying broad leadership styles. - Situational and contingency theories: Different situations call for different characteristics. No single optimal psychographic profile of a leader exists. According to the theory, what an individual actually does when acting as a leader is in large part dependent upon characteristics of the situation in which he functions. 5/9/2018

Systems Theory Systems Theory MME Systems Theory Systems Theory - Organization interact independently with other organizations in the environment - An organization’s survival is based on its utilizations of resources, both internal and external. - Mergers and acquisitions, vertical integration, and diversification are strategies organizations use to ease resource dependence. 5/9/2018

Total Quality Management MME Total Quality Management A series of approaches to emphasize quality in organizations, especially in regard to producing products and serving both external and internal customers. Managers combine strategic approaches to deliver the best products and services by continuously improving every part of an operation. 5/9/2018

Total Quality Management MME Total Quality Management While management implements and leads TQM in an organization, every employee must be responsible for quality. Used effectively TQM helps an organization maintain a competitive advantage.

Total Quality Management MME Total Quality Management The popularity of TQM in the United States increased during the late 1970s and early 1980s, when US business and industry were suffering from what many industrial experts labeled declining quality. Total quality is called total because it consists of two qualities: quality of return to satisfy the needs of the shareholders, and quality of products.
