Bill Gates and His Vision

Environment in the 70s The idea of “computers in every home” was unthinkable. It was still unclear what the “software” or the “operating system” were. 2

Who Is Bill Gates? He founded Microsoft in 1975. Participative leader, Programmer, Entrepreneur, Genius. In just 25 years, he built a two-man operation into a multibillion-dollar colossus. Managed to create the greatest “Network Effect” in tech market. 3

Who is Bill Gates? 4

What he did In 1980 MS partners with IBM to write the BASIC for the IBM PC. By 1990 IBM Compatible PCs captured an 80% market share (by 2000 97%). 5

What he did In 1990 MS releases the Windows SDK to allow anybody to develop apps for Windows OS. In 2000 launched the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to enhance healthcare, reduce poverty, expand educational opportunities and access to information technology. 6

His Vision “A computer on every desk and in every home.” MS-DOS and Windows provided a standardized, functional, useful environment. Gates created an highly flexible OS at a lower price for all. 7

His Vision Gates had in mind when he built the Windows operating system that third-party developers should be  allowed to create software applications on top of it. By doing so, Windows was able to build a massive software ecosystem that helped it dominate the PC market for years. 8

His Vision “We need a creative capitalism where business and non-governmental organizations work together to create a market system that eases the world’s inequities”. Bill Gates has called for capitalism to contribute more effectively to the big social and environmental issues of the emerging century. 9

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and opportunities.

Why Bill Gates had a better vision than Steve Jobs? Bill Gates was a better entrepreneur: - ideas coming from more people inside Microsoft - he understood immediately what people wanted Bill Gates has a more pratic view of technology: - computers for everyone, really! - permits third parties to collaborate Bill Gates more active in humanitarian efforts THIS IS A SLIDE ONLY FOR EXPLAINING WHAT SHOULD BE SAID IN THE SLIDE BEFORE: Of course there must be the comparison with steve jobs, even if it is not written: - ideas coming from more people inside Microsoft While in Apple there is a hierarchical structure where.... - he understood immediately what people wanted, giving OS with low prices bla bla bla... (but maybe this point could be cut, or elaborated in a different way...) - computers for everyone, really! While apple does not product computers for everyone, because of the price,.... - permits third parties to collaborate, while apple permits to do it in a very limited way 11
