Outliers Ch. 2 Mrs Bly

HOOK “The 10,000- Hour Rule” Journal #2 You have just been stranded on a remote island. Finally, you have time to do whatever you want! For as long as you want! You have no hope of rescue for the next 1,000 days…and you have at least 10 hours of day light each day. HOW will you spend your time? What would you do for 10,000 hours? What would you NOT do? Describe your days and how you invest your time. Be creative!

Engage/ Motivate Ask 2-3 Students to share how they would spend their 10,000 hours on a desert island

Focus Question Ch. 2 TALENT + PREPARATION = ACHIEVEMENT MAIN IDEA: IF ……… TALENT + PREPARATION = ACHIEVEMENT Focus Question: How much preparation time (practice time) do you need to complete to become successful? ANSWER: 10,000 hours! NOTE: the practice time must be focused, meaningful practice time

Summary Section- SQ Review (class instruction) Ch. 2 SQ Answers: I made a quizlet and shared it with everyone. https://quizlet.com/185223356/flashcards

Chapter 2 Review Section 1 Bill Joy – “The Edison of the Internet” He co-founded Sun Microsystems Section 2 Is there such a thing as innate talent? TALENT + PREPARATION = ACHIEVEMENT You need to do focused, meaningful practice BUT you also need extraordinary opportunity & support

Ch. 2 Review Section 3 Bill Joy’s story He went to University of Michigan which was one of the first universities in the world to switch over to time-sharing So 100 people could use the computer at once instead of just 1 He spent all his time there; it was open 24 hours He says he programmed “8-10 hours a day” He concluded he spent about 10,000 hours programming

Ch. 2 Review Section 4- The Beatles The Beatles started playing together in 1957 They came to America in 1964 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967 (about 10 years later …which is approximately 10,000 hours!) 1960- Went to play in Hamburg, Germany at all-night strip clubs They were forced to play for 8 hours at time, 7 days a week By 1964 they had played 1,200 times!

Ch. 2 Review Section 5-Bill Gates Opportunities! 1. Gates went to Lakeside Private School (a high school that had a time share terminal in 1968) 2. the moms of Lakeside students had money to pay the fees 3. When the money ran out, one mom worked at C-Cubed & let kids go there 4. Gates found out about ISI & someone needed that info 5. Gates lived in walking distance to University of Washington 6. U of W had free computer time from 3am- 6am 7. TRW called Bud Pembroke 8. Those Pembroke programmers used high school kids for help 9.Lakeside school let the kids spend the Spring term writing code for TRW

Ch 2 Review Section 6- The Path to Success “But what truly distinguishes their histories [Bill Joy, Beatles, Bill Gates] is not their extraordinary talent but their extraordinary opportunities” 75 Richest People in Human History Chart 14 are Americans born between 1832-1839 BIG EVENTS: 1860s & 1870s US Railroads built & Wall Street emerged “What this list says is that it really matters how old you were when that transformation happened.” Most important date for Computer Revolution: 1975 Perfect age to be in 1975 would be 20-21 yrs old Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Ballmer, Steve Jobs, Eric Schmidt, Bill Joy were ALL born between 1954- 1955

Formative Assessment: “Four Corners” Based on what we have discussed today, choose the corner of the room that MOST reflects your viewpoint on the book. Corner 1= I AGREE100% with the author Gladwell; The 10,000 Hour-Rule is exactly right. Corner 2= I DISAGREE 100% with the author. He is wrong! Corner 3= It’s 50/50. The author has some good points but fails to fully explain his ideas. Corner 4= I’m totally lost; I don’t even understand this book!
