How to explore Climate-ADAPT as a user interested in adaptation at transnational level Enviroinfo 2016 Berlin, Germany Venue: University of Applied Sciences Presenter: Valdur Lathvee Valdur.Lathvee@cbss.iorg CBSS, Stockholm

Explore the platform from a transnational perspective User who is interested in how climate change might affect a transnational region and what are related possible adaptation solutions Specific example: climate change effects on biodiversity in the Baltic Sea regions

1) Screening transnational regions information by going to the green navigation bar and selecting the tab ‘countries, regions, cities’ and then ‘transnational regions’ via the drop-down menu Brings user to the introductory page of the 12 transnational regions defined by the EC´s macroregional cooperation programme 204-2020

3 options to screen the information for transnational regions 2) Click on the name of the region in the legend 1) use drop-down menu to click on the region

region 3 options to screen the information for transnational regions 3) Via the map: Access the the individual region by click directly on the region shown on the map A tooltip is opening showing the region´s profile including a list of the EU and Non-Eu countries belonging to the region Click on the name of the region in the tooltip („Baltic Sea“)

Screening for adaptation in a transnational regions Consisten template for all transnational regions with descriptive text for „Poliy framwork“ and adaptation priorities as well as „Assessments and projects“ funded by the DG Regio and intiatives beyond that programme Access country profiles via breadcrumb

Access detailed information on adaptation in transnational regions Use link in the first paragraph of the transnational regions template

Access descriptive information and key resources Summary information on climate change impacts and vulnerabilities Third level menu: Specific information on policy framework, climate change impacts and respective adaptation action Portlets: Selected Indicators and other resources Introductory page, using third level menu go to specific information

Examples for links to key resources and related sector pages Within the descriptive text in the third level menu: Easy access to key resources for impacts on biodiversity in the Baltic Sea Region Easy access to related pages for further reading on the impacts of climate change on biodiversity

Further information on addressing adaptation in EU biodiversity policy sectors Complete content update Agriculture, Forestry, Health, Biodiversity, Water management; Urban online now More specified information: energy, transport and buildings new, agriculture and forestry split Improved structure of descriptive information Policy framework, Improving the Knowledge base, supporting funding and investment More links to key resources Another example of how to present the information - are the pages on EU adaptation poliy – here mainstreaming of adaptation in the EU policy sectors. Please note that only the sectors listed on the slide have been updated. The others will follow at the end of June (due to slow process in the commission). It can be highlighted that we have descriptive summaries of the sector policies including links to key resources (also on research results) as well as the respective sector related results of the searchable database. Description of EU policies with links to key resources and indicators at European scale http://climate-adapt.eea.europa.eu/eu-adaptation-policy/mainstreaming

Access to key indicators for the Baltic Sea Region Example of an indicator for impacts on biodiversity in the Baltic Sea Region: EEA indicator „Sea Surface Temperature“

Access to key information portals for the Baltic Sea Region Get access to key information portals for impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the Baltic Sea Region via using the portlets for I“nformation Portals“ Access to Key information portals

3) Complete overview of resources for further reading Search the „Results Panel“ for access to all resources in the Climate-ADAPT database related to Climate change impacts in the Baltic Sea Region 89 items out of 1800 items available in the Climate-ADAPT database 11 categories to cover all aspects of adaptation Screening of external sources via metadata Searchable by sector, impact, country etc.

Direct access from the homepage to the Climate-ADAPT database

DB items related to biodiversity in the Baltic Sea Regions´ countries Further selecting the items using the search functions avaialble on the tab „Database“ using the filter criteria „Sector“ and „Countries“ Metadata sheets help to explore if it is worth to go to further to explore the external information source Quality assurance done by the information providers

4) Links from adaptation at transnational level to country and city level Country information Information reported by countries under the EU Monitoring Mechanism Regulation (MMR) 2015 and voluntary yearly updates Access to Estonia adaptation country profile via the country drop down list

Information reported by countries under the EU Monitoring Mechanism Regulation (MMR) 2015 and voluntary yearly updates Updated by EEA Member countries yearly on a voluntary basis Unique place for overview on all countries (in English) For countries without an adaptation platform sometimes the only place where all adaptaion information is available in one place Links to most important documents in national languages

4) National level information on policy framework Use the tab „Policy framework in the third level menu Biodiversity is one of the priorities in the Estonian NAS under the area „Environment“

Access to city level informtion From city level information to the European Commissions´Mayors Adapt Initiative

5) Links from transnational information to EU Adaptation policy and funding Descriptive information and links to key resources on EU Adaptation Strategy Mainstreaming into other EU policy sectors EU funding of adaptation Accessible from main green navigation bar on the homepage

6) Using Climate-ADAPT tools and resources for policy and planning Adaptation Support Tool accessible from the homepage

6) Using Climate-ADAPT tools and resources for policy and planning - Adaptation options Adaptation options provide a systematic view of measures which are available to deal with expected drought and water scarcity impacts, independently on the specific Climate-ADAPT case studies

6) Using Climate-ADAPT tools and resources for policy and planning - Adaptation options

6) Using Climate-ADAPT tools and resources for policy and planning - Case studies Show that adaptation initiatives are already in place in Europe Provide examples of design and implementation of adaptation measures Support regional and local decision makers to cope with vulnerabilities to climate change

One example of a case study River flood management in Klaipeda City (Lithuania) Scenario-based identification of most suitable flood protection measures combining complex embankment and dyke systems with recreation

Case study sheet Summary Description: challenges, objectives, adaptation options implemented, solutions, importance and relevance of adaptation Additional details: stakeholder participation, success and limiting factors, costs and benefits, legal aspects, implementation time, life time, keywords Reference information: contact, websites, source Information use to select case studies: sectors, climate impacts, geographic characterization, year Images and documents

Case study search tool- searching for a inspiration for impacts on biodiversity in the BSR Search for impact „extreme temperature“ and for sector „biodiversity“ No case study in the same region available, but for the same problem in other regions (e. g. Emscher valley, Germany) More external case study information available outside Climate-ADAPT No „featured“ case study available

6) Access to results of EU funded research projects Metadata for relevant EU research projects or their results Detailed descriptive texts and links for selected EU funded research projects research projects and their results relevant for adaption policy and planning Promotion of research projects results Key sectoral research projects and their results relevant for the EU sector policies

Research projects and their results in the Climate-ADAPT database Added value to the Cordis database: Easy access to 397 European projects via search filters, showcase them in policy-relevant context is complementary to national databases: includes daptation relevant Horizon2020, FP7, LIFE/LIFE+, and Interreg projects and their results Access to different types of research projects results* seachable via different filters * included in 1128 database items

Research projects on the „Research projects“ page Presentation of the most relevant projects via descriptive texts links to the original sources of information

Research projects in the policy context - EU Sector policies pages Highlighting key research projects from the Climate-ADAPT database in the relevant political context

Reserach projects in the policy context - Adaptation Support Tool Highlighting key research projects from the Climate- ADAPT database in the relevant planning and policy context
