Empower Within by Power of One Courtney Barth NC FCCLA VP of Programs District 3 Sanderson High School

Overview FCCLA members empower themselves by setting goals and completing the 5 unit project know as the Power of One. One goal at a time, members make positive changes in their school, communities, and families. The Power of One gives students the power to achieve success by creating, developing, and accomplishing goals focused on “A better you”, “Family Ties”, “Working on Working”, “Take the Lead”, and “Speak out for FCCLA.”

Objective NC FCCLA members will be able to empower themselves by setting 5 goals to improve their families, leadership skills, personal character, career preparation, and NC FCCLA.

Ice Breaker #1 Mix it Up (15 minutes) As students walk into the workshop, hand each participant a slip of paper with either a F, C, L, or A on it Ask participants to find 3-5 people with the same letter With each person they meet… Introduce yourselves (Name, school, etc) Share what your letter means to you Ex: “the F in FCCLA means the motivation to improve my relationship with my parents & spend more time together” Share a fun fact about yourself Make up a secret hand shake Purpose: Allow students to network & learn what FCCLA means to themselves & others

Ice Breaker #2 Clusters (10 minutes) The presenter (you) calls out a category The participants must try to find their group Each group cheers their “name” Everyone in the most spirited group gets a piece of candy Repeat w/ different category Purpose: Create a bond between students and create group synergy *Note: Presenters should plan to purchase small rewards before workshop! (Not required) Category Examples: # of siblings Favorite ice cream flavor # of pets Month you were born Hair color Favorite writing utensil Eye color # of years in FCCLA Favorite animal Favorite genre of music State where you were born Grade in school Shirt color

Ice Breaker #3 Human Knot (10 minutes) The presenter (you) will ask all participants to get into groups of 4-5 Each group will get into a small circle Each group member will reach across the circle and grab another person’s hand Ask each group to “un-knot” themselves End result: circle with everyone holding hand Purpose: Create teamwork & problem solving skills amongst students and future leaders

Ice Breaker #4 Heads Up (10 minutes) All participants get into a circle All participants will begin looking down at their feet The presenter will call out “1, 2, 3, UP!” When the presenter says “UP!” all participants will look up & look at one specific person across the circle If two people happen to look at each other, both people are removed from the circle. Repeat until only one or two people are left in the circle Purpose: Encourage positivity & energy during the workshop as students get to know each other better

Power of One Personal Hero Activity (10 minutes) Sample Character Traits: Courageous Responsible Honest Brave Humble Tenacious Strong Kind Selfless Reliable Smart Audacious Versatile Productive Hardworking Valiant Perseverance Compassionate Personal Hero Activity (10 minutes) Give each participant a blank sheet of paper Write three character traits that describe their personal hero Write one sentence explaining why they are a “hero” Have students share (time permitting) Purpose: encourage students to think about what makes someone a hero & how they can become a hero *Note: Blank paper required for activity

Keep an activity log Take photos & video Write in a progress journal Save important documents Complete the Follow Up section (handout #1 Project Sheet) What were the most successful parts of your project? What would you change if you repeated the project?

Power of One Step 5: Submit your project to your adviser/ evaluation team Show off your accomplishments! Ask your adviser to complete the Follow-Up Checklist (Handout #1 Project Sheet) Members who complete all 5 units will receive recognition at the State Leadership Conference!
