Presentation transcript:

Cannulation: Basically, the insertion of a hollow tube into the body, usually for the insertion of removal of a fluid.

Applied Cannulation: Usually made of surgical steel or soft plastic, depending on placement and purpose. May be inserted intravenously, subcutaneously, or into body cavity such as nasal passage, or throat. May also be inserted into specific regions of the brain of rodents or other experimental animals.

How it works: The tube allows for direct access to internal cavities or the blood supply. Health professionals may use cannulae to administer fluids (IV) or gasses (such as anesthetic or pure oxygen). May also be used to drain fluids or measure gaseous output.

Purpose: Administration or removal of fluids/chemicals. What is the content of the internal fluid? What is the content or mixture of gasses upon exhalation? Experimentally: how does the altered level of this chemical change behavior?

Examples of use Intravenous insertion of fluids, medications Intravenous removal of blood samples Experimentally administering specific proteins to the limbic system of cocaine addicted rats to study effects on memory.
