French Canada - Quebec In 1534, Jacques Cartier claimed the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes for France. The first French settlement was established in 1606. The territory came under British rule after the Treaty of Paris in 1763, after the French and Indian Wars.

Canada is officially bilingual: two thirds of its citizens speak English, one fourth speak French, the rest speak other languages. Canada has a British style Parliamentary form of government. The current Prime Minister is Stephen Harper.
