Louisiana Ethnic groups

Acadians (Cajuns) Why did they MIGRATE to Louisiana? Acadian people were French people living in a place called Nova Scotia which is in Canada. The king made them leave Canada They travelled south and wound up in Louisiana

Why did they migrate to Louisiana?

What happened after the Acadians got to Louisiana? Cajun people are known for their food, music, and traditions. Some famous dishes prepared by Cajun people are jambalaya and gumbo.

African How did African American people arrive in America? Many African American people arrived in America because they were forced. They came from the continent of Africa and were kidnapped and forced onto boats heading for America. The journey from Africa to the Americas is called the Middle Passage.

What happened once Africans arrived in America? Once African arrived in Louisiana they were sold as Slaves. Many slaves worked on large farms called Plantations. The life of a slave was very hard.

How have African Americans influenced Louisiana? African American brought many traditions from African culture to Louisiana including their music and food. They introduced food like okra and sweet potatoes to Louisiana cooking.

French How did the French arrive in Louisiana? The French were the first people to found the city of New Orleans. (Iberville and Bienville) The French sent young men and women to Louisiana to live in the new settlements. These people were called colonists.

How did the French influence Louisiana? The French were in charge of Louisiana and New Orleans for many years. We can see French influence especially in the names of places and streets in New Olreans

Spanish Why did Spanish people immigrate to Louisiana? After a war called “The Seven Years War” Spain was given Louisiana from the French. The Spanish controlled Louisiana for During this time many people from Spain and the canary islands came to live in Louisiana.

How have the Spanish Influenced Louisiana? While the Spanish were in control of New Orleans there were two great fires that destroyed all most all of the buildings. The Spanish rebuilt the city. Now many of the buildings in the city have Spanish architecture.
