Helping you prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease NHS Health Checks Helping you prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease

Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Even if you’re feeling well, its worth having your NHS Health Check to lower your chances of developing these problems in the future.  The good news is that these conditions can be prevented, even if you have a history of them in your family.  Have your FREE NHS Health Check and you will be better prepared for the future and be able to take steps to maintain or improve your health.

Who is eligible for a NHS Health Check? An NHS Health Check is available to everyone aged between 40-74 years of age who has not already been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, stroke or chronic kidney disease

Why do I need an NHS Health Check? Your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease increases with age, however there are also other things that will put you at an even greater risk:  Being overweight  Lack of exercise  Smoking  High cholesterol  High blood pressure 4

What happens at the check? The check is to assess your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and stroke.  The check will take about 20-30 minutes You will be asked simple questions about your family history and any medication you are currently taking  Record your height, weight, age, sex, and ethnicity  Record you blood pressure  Take a blood sample to check your cholesterol level 5 5

What happens after the check? Your results will be discussed and you will be given personal advice on how to lower your risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some further tests may be needed dependent on the results. Treatment or medication may be prescribed to help you maintain your health. 6 6
