Food chain connection: Eat Chum salmon. Human uses: Food. Misc. facts: A light belly and there are small black spots on the back and upper lobe of the tail while in the ocean.

Sockeye Salmon Other names: The name "sockeye" is thought to have been a interpretation of various Indian tribes' word “sukkai.” Sockeye also known as bluebacks. This, of course, doesn’t relate to their reddish color that happens in late adulthood for spawning purposes. Appearance: The size of an adult returning to spawn may measure up to 2ft., 8in. long and 8 pounds. They typically turn bright red, with a green head. A hump on there back. Male pinks develop a very distinct beak and their body color darkens and also becomes much more pronounced. Maturity to spawning: After returning to their spawning stream, their coloring changes to pale grey on the tail-end, with a yellowish white belly. Diet: Water dwelling insects. Food chain connection Human uses: Caviar. Misc. facts: Tiny scales. The most abundance of fish in the U.S.

Chum Salmon Other names: Dog, Keta, or Calico salmon. Appearance: They generally weigh 12 to 15 lbs, and usually measure 18 to 30 inches long. This is marked by a bold, jagged, reddish line and a jagged black line on the tail end. Maturity to spawning: After 2 to 3 years at sea, the chum salmon are ready to spawn. Diet: They feed primarily on plankton and crustaceans such as tiny shrimp. Food chain connection: Helps the eggs down stream get nutrients. Human uses: Stock fish. Misc. facts: Both sexes develop a “tiger stripe” pattern of bold red and black stripes.
