Course Description Geography is one the oldest fields of study! During the year, we will be studying the physical, political and cultural characteristics of various parts of the world. We will be discussing current events. Students will be expected to voice their opinions and ideas and be able to listen to and respect those of others.

Course Objective In this World Geography course, students will… Students will study the how location, climate, physical features and resources of a place affect its people. Students will examine how people interact with their environment, and how people, goods, and ideas move from place to place. Students will be challenged to use their critical thinking skills and map skills to analyze key ideas and concepts. Because this a Pre-AP course, students will be expected to read the textbook, study vocabulary, annotate articles and write. We will be focused on thesis writing and preparing for various writing styles for the AP tests.

Homework Homework for this course will generally consist of reading assignments/chapter reading guides, mapping work, written reflections and studying for quizzes and tests. The assignments will be rigorous in nature to prepare students for success in future Advanced Placement (AP) course. All homework for this course is due at the BEGINNING of class. I will be giving students some time in class to complete work, but there is an expectation of some homework or reading each night.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS 2. Be ON TIME, prepared and organized 1. Treat everyone with respect and keep an open mind 2. Be ON TIME, prepared and organized 3. Be an active participant, not just present 4. Use everything as an opportunity to build character 5. Work hard and always do your best 6. Wear a student ID at all times

STUDENT SUPPLIES Each student should bring the following to class EVERYDAY: 1. Pencil and pen 2. Binder w/ subject tabs or a folder for handouts 3. Composition Notebook for Journal writing (This will stay in my room. 4. Map Colors (those can be left in my supply area if student prefers.) *If you need help with purchasing supplies, let me know and I will help find you resources.

Classroom Supplies I use various supplies to enrich the classroom experience. Any donation would be greatly appreciated! Here are the following supplies needed: 1. Colored pencils 2. Pencil sharpeners (manual) for map colors 3. Small Scissors 4. Glue sticks 5. Kleenex

Attendance Excellent attendance is crucial to your success in this class. In the instance where attendance is not possible, it is your responsibility to check my Moodle page to see what you missed or communicate with me about make up work. Any work due on the day of your absence should be turned in immediately upon your return. Please make arrangements before a scheduled absence (field trip, etc.) to make up any quizzes, tests, or essays that will be missed. If you miss class or know you will be out, please check my website to see what you missed. Handouts and notes given in class can also be found on my website. If, after consulting my website, you still have questions or concerns about completing makeup work, please see me.

LATE WORK Students must learn the consequences of not completing work on time. Any late work received will automatically be 15 points off for the first day late, an additional 15 points for the second day. I will then email parents and will not accept work after the third day.

CELL PHONE USAGE Students will not use any personal electronic devices (cell phones, iPads, iPods, laptopcomputers, etc.) during class without prior permission. I will clearly communicate when you are allowed to use your electronic device or mobile devices. Recording audio or video without permission is forbidden. All electronic devices must be put away during tests and quizzes in the Cell Phone Jail at the front of the room. Evidence of electronic devices visible during tests and quizzes will be considered an attempt to cheat and will result in a zero for the assessment.

GRADING CRITERIA   This course will be assessed via two to three summative grades per marking period, formatives grades from various types of assignments, such as reading guides, vocabulary quizzes, journal writing and map work for each unit. Progress reports will be sent home to all students at the mid‐point of each grading period, and traditional report cards are sent home at the end of each six‐week marking period. If a student is at a 75 or below at the mid-point or end of the six weeks they MAY be assigned to mandatory tutorials during InVest time. Failure to show up for for those tutorials will result in detention and loss of InVest time.

ACADEMIC HONESTY Plagiarism is the use of another person’s original ideas or writing as one’s own without giving credit to the true author. This might include copying assignments from another student, copying from a book, or from websites. Plagiarism is cheating, and students who cheat – including those who provide answers as well as those who copy – will be subject to both an academic penalty and punishment for the behavior. For daily assignments or major grades, students will receive a permanent grade of zero and be referred to the Assistant Principal for disciplinary action.
