Getting Ready For High School Appling Middle School Fabion Vicks

High School can be…… Exciting Anxiety filled Competitive Fun Scary Best/worst days of your life

How can we be successful in High School? Procedural Changes Schedule, rules/handbook Social Changes New friends/ new activities Academic Changes New school-harder assignments

Transitioning to HS Adjusting to the Bell

How to learn your new school Actually go to your school and walk around. Learn the different sections of your school (bathroom, library, cafeteria, gym, main office, counselor office) Participate in open house: Take your parents with you -parents will be familiar with layout when they visit Learn your bell/class schedule!!!!

Transitioning to HS Social Changes

I’m in high school…now what? “I don’t know anybody” “I don’t think nobody likes me” “I don’t like anyone”

Ways to be more sociable in HS Participate in extra-curricular activities: Band/fine arts Sports Debate/academic teams DECA FBLA BETA Club

Tri-Cities High School 1995

Fort Valley State University 2001

Ways to be sociable in HS Be approachable Take electives Do volunteering or get a job Introduce yourself to New People Go to school functions (parties, school dance, football games)

Choosing the right Time…when is that? Don’t try to start a conversation at an obviously bad time, like in the middle of a quiz or while the person is distracted by other things that seem to be commanding their attention. Realize that some people don’t like talking in certain situations. Some people don’t enjoy talking while riding the bus or wiping the cafeteria tables. If they don’t seem to warm up to your attempts to engage them in conversation, let it go

Transition to HS Academically Ready

How can I be successful in High School? Know your credit summary for courses Plan out your goals Be organized Know what you are capable of accomplishing

How many credits I need to graduate? You will need 24 credits to graduate HS (3)social studies (4)Language arts, science, and math (2)foreign language (7)electives (CTAE, Magnet, Other)

How to plan goals? Smart Goals…what? Specific (I want a XBOX1 $400) Measurable (my allowance is $100/month) Attainable (it is, save $50/month) Realistic (yes) Time Bound (8 monthsX$50)

How do I apply it to Academics? Smart (I want to get all A’s in my 9th grade year 2016-17) Measureable (9 weeks report Card) Attainable (It is, 6 classes) Realistic (it can be done, I did it in 8th grade) Time bound (report cards: Aug. 2016-Dec.2016, Jan. 2017-May 2017)

Organization Is Key Write important things down Get an organizer Separate your work/notes by class Get a study area at home Make sure your book bag and locker is organized Get 7-9 hours sleep per night

Any Questions?
