The “Doctrines of Grace” Three Questions… What is the Bible all about? God & Man Reconciled Through Christ

The “Doctrines of Grace” Three Questions… What is the most important word or theme in the Bible?

The “Doctrines of Grace” Three Questions… What is the prime and active agent in the salvation of a person?

Grace Alone

Jacobus Arminius 1560-1609 Studied under Theodore Beza (John Calvin’s successor) Dutch theologian Professor: Leiden University Differed with Calvin on: The extent of the effects of sin on man Unconditional election Irresistible grace Perseverance Predestination His followers composed a “Remonstrance” – a forcefully reproachful protest against the historic teachings of the Church. 01/10/2010

The “Five Points of the Remonstrance” Divine election is based upon man’s foreseen faith and obedience not upon God’s sovereign choice. Christ’s death atoned for the sins of every single human being without exception. (Q. Then why are not all saved?) Regeneration enables sinners to do good toward salvation, but man has free will due to only to partial depravity. Man is not completely dead in his trespasses and sins; only mostly dead. A person can ultimately resist the Holy Spirit’s gracious, saving work on him Those who have been truly saved may finally fall away from the faith and perish in hell.

The Synod (council) of Dort’s response to the “Five Points of the Remonstrance” - TULIP T — Total depravity (total inability) – sin has affected every aspect of man rendering him “dead” to God (Ephesians 2:1-3) U — Unconditional Election – God choses (elects) persons unto salvation by His own sovereign choice (Ephesians 1:6) L — Limited atonement (particular redemption) – Christ died for a specific people chosen by God (John 17:9-11). I — Irresistible grace (effectual calling) – those who God chooses to save will respond to God’s gracious call (John 6:37-40) P — Perseverance of the Saints – those whom God has chosen to save, will be saved and exhibit fruits of salvation (Philippians 1:6).

Romans 8:28-30 28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

The Council of Dort The council considered as error those who teach; “that there are various kinds of election of God unto eternal life: the one general and indefinite, the other particular and definite; and that the latter in turn is either incomplete, revocable, non-decisive, and conditional, or complete, irrevocable, decisive, and absolute. Likewise: That there is one election unto faith and another unto salvation, so that election can be unto justifying faith, without being a decisive election unto salvation.”

The Council of Dort They go on to write: For this is a fancy of men's minds, invented regardless of the Scriptures, whereby the doctrine of election is corrupted, and this golden chain of our salvation is broken: “And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.” (Rom 8:30).

Who are the beneficiaries of the chain? And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). We have every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3) including: adoption as children of God (1:5); our redemption (1:7); our receiving an inheritance (1:11); and our being sealed with the Holy Spirit (1:13).

Eternity Past Eternity Future

Romans 8:28-30 28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Ephesians 1:5-6 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace…

Who is the Benefactor of the chain? 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified (Romans 8:29-30).

Princeton Professor of Theology B.B. Warfield (1851-1921) Princeton Professor of Theology “It is not faith that saves, but faith in Jesus Christ.... It is not, strictly speaking, even faith in Christ that saves, but Christ that saves through faith. The saving power resides exclusively, not in the act of faith or the attitude of faith or in the nature of faith, but in the object of faith."

What is the benefit of the chain? 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified (Romans 8:29-30).

2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.

Romans 8:35, 38-39 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
