Ivory Coast By: Taylor Bompensa

Facts Ivory Coast is Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Ghana and Liberia. Ivory Coast is slightly larger than New Mexico. Some natural resources are petroleum, natural gas, diamonds, manganese, iron ore, cobalt, bauxite, copper, gold, nickel, tantalum, silica sand, clay, cocoa beans, coffee, palm oil, hydropower. Some hazards are coast has heavy surf and no natural harbors; during the rainy season torrential flooding is possible

History The first French posts were established in Côte d'Ivoire in 1843. In 1893 the territory was formally named Ivory Coast and placed under a French governor. On December 4, 1958, Ivory Coast accepted a new French constitution and opted for the status of an autonomous republic within the French Community. On August 7, 1960, the Republic of Ivory Coast proclaimed its complete independence.

Flowers and Animals A total of 4,700 plant species grow there. The country is home to more than 1,000 species of animals. They have 232 different mammal species. In the virgin rain forest, trees grow over 165 feet high, hung with vines, and wild animals abound. Africa; it is full of animals such as lions, leopards, elephants, hippopotamuses, baboons, colobus monkeys, green monkeys, waterbucks, antelopes, and 21 kinds of pigs.

Animal Green Monkeys have black facial skin with golden-yellow whiskers. Also known as the Callithrix monkey,[3] is an Old World monkey with golden-green fur and pale hands and feet. The tip of the tail is golden yellow as are the backs of the thighs and cheek whiskers. It does not have a distinguishing band of fur on the brow, like other Chlorocebus species, and males have a pale blue scrotum.[4].

Food A favorite Côte d'Ivoirian side dish is attiéké, a couscous made from manioc (cassava), which is generally served with fish or kedjenou, a chicken dish cooked with vegetables and sauce.
