Course : WEB ENGINEERING Paper Code: ETCS-308 TOPIC: Folksonomies

TAGS It is keyword or a term attached to a piece of information for the purpose of identification. Tags seem to be effective in helping people to find and discover information. Web is a collection of unstructured links and resources. Using tags can give people a sense of organization.

TAGS

TAXONOMY Earliest technology for organizing web content. Only the admin/authorized person can control the content or tags. Use of taxonomy is not possible in websites with user generated content. Most of the websites nowadays allows user interaction so the disadvantages of taxonomies are overcome by folksonomies.

FOLKSONOMY It is a process organizing or classifying online content by defining user defined tags. Folksonomy = Folks + Taxonomy Folks = Done by People Taxonomy = Way of organizing content The term was coined by Thomas Vander Wal. It became popular onwards 2004 with the advent of social networking sites.

Visualizing Folksonomy

Advantages Cheap and easy way to classify web content. Capable of adapting to user style. Scalability - Easy to use. Helps machine to retrieve best information on the web. Reflects the user’s interests.

Disadvantages Polisemy, which means same tag with different meanings. eg, Jaguar (animal , a car brand). Synonyms , words with the same meaning Eg mistake and error Singular vs plural words. Organization is done by users.
