Welcome to AP Stats!

The AP Exam Thursday, May17, 2018. This is during the second week of AP testing and about 4 weeks after Spring Break. The TEST: 3 hours -- 40 Multiple Choice Questions, 5 Free-Response Questions, 1 “Investigative Task” Note: NO penalty for guessing!! You CAN be successful on this exam ONLY IF you put forth the effort ALL YEAR LONG. I will provide you with LOTS of preparation materials as well as insight on the grading of the exam.

What do you Need? You will need the following items for this course: Graphing Calculator - Required (TI83or84+ recommended) Notebook - 2 or 3 subject, college-ruled Folder for tables, handouts, notes, & reading guides etc. Pencil, pen, highlighter Strong work ethic and a willingness to ask for help!

Your Textbook “The Practice of Statistics, 5e” by Starnes, Tabor, Yates, & Moore Available as hard copy and e-book (through Launchpad) http://www.highschool.bfwpub.com/launchpad/tps5e/5492588 Complete the New Student Registration with your given access code

Course Websites Check my class page for links to helpful websites. There are some great AP Stats websites. Launchpad contains tutorials, videos, worked out solutions to selected problems and plenty of practice as well as FRAPPY examples. I will be posting both all powerpoint presentations on my webpage Class Code for Google Classroom is: Period 7 lhqauck Period 8 7276af

Expectations My goal is for you to understand Statistics and how it plays a role in your current and future life. My hope is you will be successful in the course and earn a passing score on the AP Exam. My expectation is that you will put forth the effort necessary to be successful in a college-level course. Just remember: “Nothing will work unless you do.” Maya Angelou

BE AWARE TO AVOID THE FOLLOWING: HONOR CODE BE AWARE TO AVOID THE FOLLOWING: Cheating – Cheating includes the actual giving or receiving of any unauthorized aid or assistance or the actual giving or receiving of any unfair advantage on any form of academic work, that is homework or testing. HOWEVER: Collaboration: Students are encouraged to work together and help each other understand homework questions and class work. “Understand together. Write it up alone.”

Chapter 1 Exploring Data Introduction: Data Analysis: Making Sense of Data 1.1 Analyzing Categorical Data 1.2 Displaying Quantitative Data with Graphs 1.3 Describing Quantitative Data with Numbers

Introduction Data Analysis: Making Sense of Data Learning Objectives After this section, you should be able to… DEFINE “Individuals” and “Variables” DISTINGUISH between “Categorical” and “Quantitative” variables DEFINE “Distribution” DESCRIBE the idea behind “Inference”

What is Statistics?

What is Statistics? Statistics is the science (and art) of learning from data, that is: Collecting data Analyzing data Drawing conclusions from data *

WHAT DOES A STATISTICIAN DO??? A Statistician makes sense of the information collected about the world.

WHY DO WE NEEDSTATISTICS?? Because…………………….. … anecdotal evidence is not reliable. … we don’t wish to be lied to. … spotting trends helps us make good decisions Simply, we need statistics because we want to make sense of the world. *

THERE ARE TWO BRANCHES OF STATISTICS: DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS (Data Analysis) The methods of organizing & summarizing data Graphical techniques Numerical techniques INFERENTIAL STATISTICS Involves making generalizations from a sample to a population Estimation Decision making

Data Analysis Statistics is the science of data. Data Analysis is the process of organizing, displaying, summarizing, and asking questions about data. Individuals objects described by a set of data Variable any characteristic of an individual Categorical Variable places an individual into one of several groups or categories. Quantitative Variable takes numerical values for which it makes sense to find an average.

Dotplot of MPG Distribution Data Analysis A variable generally takes on many different values. We are interested in how often a variable takes on each value. Distribution tells us what values a variable takes and how often it takes those values. Dotplot of MPG Distribution Variable of Interest: MPG

How to Explore Data Examine each variable by itself. Then study relationships among the variables. Start with a graph or graphs Add numerical summaries

From Data Analysis to Inference Population Sample Collect data from a representative Sample... Make an Inference about the Population. Perform Data Analysis, keeping probability in mind…

SOME IMPORTANT CAUTIONS:

Data Analysis: Making Sense of Data A dataset contains information on individuals. For each individual, data give values for one or more variables. Variables can be categorical or quantitative. The distribution of a variable describes what values it takes and how often it takes them. Inference is the process of making a conclusion about a population based on a sample set of data.
