Victorious Hope March 12

Remember those days? What did your mother do for you when you got sick as a child? Today we look at some people who were sick They came to Jesus for help When we come to Jesus in faith, we find hope

Jesus Is Willing Where do people today turn when they need help? Listen for who needs help and to whom he turns.

Listen for who needs help and to whom he turns. Matthew 8:5-7 (NIV) When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him."

Jesus Is Willing Who approached Jesus with a need and why would His doing so have been unexpected? What kind of need did he have? Why might this be a curious request from a Roman soldier? What did Jesus promise the soldier?

Jesus Is Willing Why might His offer have been a surprise to the centurion and others? How does Jesus’ ready willingness to help the centurion and minister to his servant encourage you? What hinders believers today from turning to Jesus for help with their problems? Why is it so difficult to give a problem over to Jesus instead of finding some other source?

Listen for a surprising suggestion. Matthew 8:8-9 (NIV) The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

Jesus Has the Authority What was the centurion’s response? What connection did the centurion make between authority and faith? What was so great about the centurion's faith? What keeps people from having the faith that God can meet our needs, solve our problems. How can we become more convinced of the authority and lordship of Jesus as we turn to Him during crises?

Listen for why Jesus is surprised. Matthew 8:10-13 (NIV) When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of

Listen for why Jesus is surprised. heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour.

Faith in Jesus Brings Hope What effect did the soldier’s words have on Jesus? At what did Jesus marvel, and why? What kinds of thoughts do you think the apostles were having as they heard this interchange … the centurion noting Jesus authority, then Jesus declaring his astonishment?

Faith in Jesus Brings Hope What is the relationship to living in hope and having faith?  Remember that “great faith” is not something that we generate from within ourselves. Great faith is faith in a Great God … faith is only as effective as the object of our faith … Jesus!

Application Trust Do you have an area of your life where you have difficulty trusting God? Trust His power and authority over all things. Let go of that area and give it to Christ.

Application Review. A key way to see God’s power and ability to work on your behalf is to see how He has worked in the past. Begin with the men and women mentioned in Hebrews 11. Look at the accounts of their lives in the Old Testament and see how God worked in their lives.

Application Ask. Be willing to ask something huge from God. Ask Him to do something with your prayer request that is “God-sized” Pray for something that can only be explained by the fact that God is at work
