Possessive Nouns

Definition: A possessive form of a noun can show possession, ownership, or the general relationship between two nouns.

Singular Nouns When a noun is singular, add -’s EVEN if the singular noun already ends in “s” Example: Car  car’s Mr. Bass  Mr. Bass’s

Plural Nouns When you have a plural noun that ends in “s,” just add an apostrophe Example: Coroners  coroners’ Teachers  teachers’

Plural Nouns When a plural noun does NOT end in “s,” add -’s Example: Women  women’s Sheep  sheep’s

Joint Ownership If two people or things own one thing together, you only add ‘s to the last noun. Example: Kimberly and Brent’s house went up for sale.

Separate Ownership When two nouns have separate ownership of two different things, add ‘s to the end of each of them Example: Kimberly’s and Brent’s socks got lost in the dryer.
