Which number would you be and why? 2000 OR 600 Which number would you be and why?

The battle of little big horn To be able to describe the events that lead to the battle To be able to explain the reasons why the US army were defeated To evaluate whether the battle was a defeat for the Native Americans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UM4eQBpfGIg

What caused the battle? Attitudes of white people – exterminators/negotiators. Attitude of Crazy Horse - refused to terms of Second Fort Laramie 1868, didn’t want to live in confines of reservation. Gold discovered in the Black Hills, 1874. Government Policy – ordered onto reservations when refused to sell and classed as hostile. Reservation conditions. 1851 and 1868 black hills sacred and just for the Sioux

Gold By 1874, rumours circulated that gold had been found in the Black Hills. In 1874, an army scouting expedition was sent out lead by Custer. He was hated among the Sioux and he had a reputation among them as being a ruthless 'Indian hunter'. By 1875, a new gold rush had started right into the heart of the sacred Black Hills. Red Cloud appealed to the government but neither the government nor the army was capable of keeping out those seeking their fortune. In the summer of 1875, the government attempted to buy the Black Hills off of the Sioux. Red Cloud wanted $600,000,000 for the area while Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse would not even be part of the discussions. Red Cloud's figure was an impossible one which the government could only refuse. In Washington, there was anger at the attitude of the Sioux and the government swiftly moved to a position whereby their desires could only be enforced by the military.

BUT WHICH CAUSE IS MOST IMPORTANT AND HOW DO THEY LINK TOGETHER? Attitudes of white people – exterminators/negotiators. Attitude of Crazy Horse - refused to terms of Second Fort Laramie 1868, didn’t want to live in confines of reservation. Gold discovered in the Black Hills, 1874. Government Policy – ordered onto reservations when refused to sell and classed as hostile. Reservation conditions.

What happened? Defeat of the US Army! Custer and his men were killed. This was one of the most famous victories for the Native Americans. Sioux also joined by Cheyenne and Arapaho

Who was to blame for the defeat? Custer? Arrogant, disobeyed orders and ignored warnings. Underestimated strength and determination of the Sioux. Reno and Benteen? Retreated when attacked, didn’t go back to support Custer. Terry and Sherman? Poor planning. The Sioux? Outnumbered army, Winchester rifles, determined, leadership of Crazy Horse

Was the battle really a victory for the Native Americans? Short term – raised Native American morale. Long term – terrible consequences Reservations placed under military control. Sioux rounded up and forced onto reservations. Indians forced to abandon tribal laws.
