Cow’s Skull with calico roses Va comp common assessment aBC Daniela Alvarez aBC Art by Georgia O'Keeffe

The description In this painting, there are smooth lines that make the clear shape of a skull and roses. The value on the white areas add depth and dimension to both. The value around them adds space. The Calico roses on opposite ends of the skull produce balance and a sort of symmetry. O’Keeffe used oil on a canvas for this painting. The title is straight to the point and very literal.

Analysis In Georgia’s painting, the main point of emphasis is the cow’s skull. The skull has a realistic proportion and the touch. The smooth contrast within the two roses make them look less flat. The texture in this painting makes the flowers look smooth, the ground around it look grainy, and the cracks in the skull sharp and dangerous. Overall, the painting looks very realistic.

Interpretation My interpretation of this painting is of life and death. The skull represents death and all the hardships that come with it, while the roses represent life. The plain background can be thought to represent the in between of life and death. When I see the painting, I feel like I should make the most of my life. I should go adventuring, or write a book! This paining just gives me so much motivation to live.

To me, this painting is a success because of what it could mean To me, this painting is a success because of what it could mean. Things like skulls and roses are known to symbolize things, so this makes you think about it. If you were to judge it yourself, I’d advise you to use the elements of art, and also pay attention o symbolism. It’s a very unique artwork that I feel needs more deep thinking than some other paintings. However, if she were to improve it, I’d recommend she define he lines to the flowers a bit. From far away, they almost blend into he skull. Also, I would add a better, bigger, more meaningful title. Other than that, this is an amazing painting that I consider to be beautiful. Judgement

jjj Thank you for viewing! Jjj All in all, I respect and admire this painting, and I think I understand why it’s in art history books now.
