Why test? Protect Lives and Property Ensure system performs as expected: will the alarm activate if there is a fire? Validate Insurance Will your insurance still be valid in the event of an incident? Statutory Regulations Require functional smoke tests to ensure the detector goes into alarm (BS 5839) The detector shall be tested in in situ (NFPA 72 2002) 100% of all installed system components must be tested (DIN 14675:2003-11) Supported by local and international standards such as 5839, VDS, etc.

Regulations “Point smoke detectors should be functionally tested by a method that confirms that smoke can enter the detector chamber and produce a fire alarm signal (e.g. by use of apparatus that generates smoke or suitable aerosols around the detector). It should be ensured that the material used does not cause damage to, or affect the subsequent performance of the detector…”. BS 5839 Part 1:2002 Clause 45.4 d: “… the entire system should be inspected and tested to ensure that it operates satisfactorily and that, in particular, …automatic fire detectors function correctly in accordance with the recommendations in 45.4” BS 5839 Part 1:2002 Clause 39.2 c: “The detectors shall be tested in place to ensure smoke entry into the sensing chamber and an alarm response.” NFPA 72 2002 Table 7-2.2 (Test Methods) 13.g.1 “… the functional testing of the automatic fire detectors is, at the very least, to be carried out through the simulation of the relevant physical characteristics of fire outside of the detector (e.g. using test aerosols for smoke…)” DIN 14675:2003-11 “100% of all installed system components must be tested and, in the case of automatic fire detector tests, the alarm be triggered by simulating the characteristics of the fire at the detector.” DIN 14675:2003-11 “Maximum transport time is measured by introducing a small quantity of smoke or aerosol into the furthest sample hole and measuring the time between first introducing the smoke and observing a “reaction” at the detector.” FIA CoP Standards used around the world specifically ask for functional smoke testing to be carried out in situ, with a stimulus that is representative of a real fire (in terms of material and smoke travel), and that does not adversely affect the detector after the test.

The problem… How to test? Accessing hard to reach detectors or ASD pipes Physical access Lifting equipment needed Detectors or pipes hidden behind architectural facia What to test with? Safe stimulus Stimulus does not affect detector sensitivity When to test? Disruption to the business environment Cordoned-off areas Out-of-hours working for test technicians Health and Safety concerns Repeat every six months, once a year, never?

Current solutions… ASD systems Test Pipe Sometimes not fitted If fitted, what stimulus is used? Reliability and safety of stimulus How to tell if the system has changed (transport time) How do you prevent overdosing detector (contamination risk)? How long does it take for detector to clear (repeat alarms)? Point detectors Difficult to access What stimulus is used? Repeatability / reliability of stimulus? High-reach poles Maximum height of 9 metres Need to be kept close to vertical (accessibility?) Supported by local and internatiuonal standards such as 5839, VDS, etc.

Scorpion Scorpion is a smoke generation system that can be mounted on the ASD pipe or alongside a point detector Enables a functional smoke test to be run from up to 100 metres (cable length) away Smoke delivered in a controlled and repeatable manner Allows measurement of transportation time to verify integrity of ASD systems Successfully tested on the majority of ASD and point detectors

System Features Separate heads for Point and ASD systems Up to 8 heads running off a wall-mounted controller Both ASD and Point can be run off the same controller Battery power provides security from accidental activation Smoke and Clear times can be customised and saved on the panel Manual transport timer for ASD systems Star topology, 4-wire cable used Up to 100m cable distance between control panel and head

Technologies Scorpion has been proven on the following technologies: ASD Light scatter Particle counting Cloud chambers Point Optical / photoelectric Ionization Conventional or addressable

Scorpion Benefits Improved Access Benefits Connecting a remote Scorpion head unit to a convenient controller means: Additional (and unsightly) ASD pipe runs eliminated Access challenges avoided Disturbance and disruption averted Transportation time evaluation avoids testing every sampling point periodically Time and Cost Saving Benefits  Huge time savings from accessibility gains (even where physical access equipment was not required) Transport time integrity evaluations Sequential testing of multiple units from a single location delivers radical time savings Out of hours working minimized or eliminated Physical access equipment costs eradicated

Scorpion Benefits Appropriate Stimulus Benign consistent particulate delivered in a controlled and repeatable manner Reduces possibility of overdosing or contaminating detector through excessive stimulant application Approved by world's leading ASD and Point detector manufacturers

Scorpion Benefits Features Smoke generation tailored for functional testing of ASD systems and point type smoke detectors Adjustable smoke time to suit characteristics of system under test Transport time function to monitor on-going ASD system performance Testing capacity In excess of 240 tests of 15 seconds each per Scorpion ASD Particle lifetime Suitable for 120 seconds / 100 metre pipe runs

The benefits of Scorpion System Designers Connecting a remote Scorpion head unit to a convenient controller avoids access challenges (Compliance with CDM) Appropriate stimulus - benign consistent particulate delivered in a controlled and repeatable manner System Installers Transportation time evaluation meets requirements of BS5839-1 and recommendations of manufacturers Sequential testing of multiple units from a single location delivers radical time savings Compliance with CDM (Construction Design Management Regulations) : you can't install life safety systems that can't be maintained

The benefits of Scorpion System Maintainers Labour costs reduced: Out of hours working minimized or eliminated Enables one engineer to complete all testing Physical access equipment costs eradicated Reduces possibility of overdosing or contaminating detector through excessive stimulant application End User Disturbance and disruption averted Potential access equipment costs saved Peace of mind that all detectors are easily testable Full compliance with industry standards and regulations Compliance with CDM (Construction Design Management Regulations) : you can't install life safety systems that can't be maintained

Installation Capabilities

Applications 24/7 public areas such as airports Fire door closing systems Restricted access areas such as prisons, military premises or banks Continuously operational areas such as manufacturing plants Hard to access areas such as warehouses Dangerous to access areas such as top of lift / elevator shafts Historic buildings (architecture)

Technical Specification Servicing intervals No regular servicing required Scorpion Head Unit sealed for life (no serviceable or field replaceable parts) Scorpion Control Panel contains fuse

Technical Specification Cabling Scorpion circuit wiring: FP200 1.5mm2, Lapp J-Y(ST) Y 0.5 mm2, or equivalent - 4 cores per head unit, solid conductor. Maximum cable length per Scorpion Control Panel Maximum Scorpions per Control Panel - 8

Summary Enables hard to access ASD systems or point smoke detectors to be functionally tested Reduces time and cost of regular testing Enables compliance with workplace rules and regulations Benign and approved stimulus reduces risk of contamination to detector Transport timer enables system performance to be monitored form one test to the next In excess of 240 tests per Scorpion head.
