Protecting Biodiversity Introduction Considering how biodiversity is being lost, what are some possible ways that we could protect biodiversity?

Protecting Biodiversity Explicit Instruction Nations pass laws and sign international treaties that protect biodiversity. Endangered Species Act (ESA) Forbids the government and citizens from harming listed species or their habitats Forbids trade in products made from listed species Requires US Fish and Wildlife Service to maintain an official list of threatened and endangered species Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Convention on Biological Diversity

Protecting Biodiversity Explicit Instruction Single-species approach Species Survival Plans manage, protect, and reintroduce threatened and endangered species. Some zoos and botanical gardens utilize captive breeding. Eventual goal of each plan is to reintroduce the organisms into the wild. Ecosystem/Habitat approach NPOs, such as Conservation International, focus protection efforts on biodiversity hotspots. Some NPOs focus on establishing wildlife corridors to connect habitat fragments.

Protecting Biodiversity Independent Practice What are the major benefits and costs of the Endangered Species Act? In what ways has the golden lion tamarin SSP been successful? What do the hotspot mapping project, conservation concession programs, and wildlife corridors do? Explain their roles. What are some of the advantages to focusing on the conservation of a single species versus trying to conserve ecosystems or habitats? What might be some of the disadvantages? Which do you think is the better approach, or should we use both?
