Act. 89 Here Today, Gone Tomorrow Challenge What are the trade-offs in deciding whether to save an endangered species or re-create an extinct one?

Key Vocabulary: Extinct -A species that does not adapt to environmental change fast enough! Endangered - A species that is on the verge of going extinct

How does the “Evolution of Hip Hop” video by Jimmy Fallon and Will Smith relate to Evolution? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTpn30Pms8I

Getting Started Does anyone know of any extinct animals? What does it mean to be extinct? Read Introduction on Page F-4

Elephant Evolutionary Trees

Procedure: Read pages F-4 to F-8 to yourself – Complete the Reading Guide as you go! Answer Analysis questions 1-3 by yourself in your notebooks. Use COMPLETE SENTENCES!!! When you are finished compare with your group members.

Analysis Answers Similarities Differences The mammoth population declined before extinction. The Asian elephant population has also declined a lot. This decline is probably due to loss of habitat and over hunting. The major difference is that humans act to help the Asian elephant. Humans are also responsible (most likely) to the habitat loss for the Asian elephant. Finally, the population decline of the Asian elephant is declining more rapidly.

The mammoth could have once been considered endangered because: Between 10,000 and 4,000 years ago, only a small number of mammoths were left on Earth. Most of the mammoths had died off, but a few herds survived. At that time, they could have been considered endangered.

Figure 2 suggests that scientists should try to recreate a living mammoth using Asian elephants first. Asian elephants and mammoths branched apart more recently than African elephants and mammoths, making them more closely related.

FOR Bringing back the mammoth: AGAINST Bringing back the Mammoth Humans contributed to their decline Extinction is a natural process that eliminates species that do not adapt quickly enough to new environmental condition. Could collect behavioral and physiological information from a living species The appropriate habitat may not be available for a re-created mammoth The re-created mammoth might have a negative effect upon other current species.

Should the wild population of the Asian Elephant be saved? Yes No Should the wild population of the Asian Elephant be saved?

Should we try and save the wild population of the Asian Elephant? State your opinion Include at least 2 pieces of evidence from the reading. Discuss one trade-off of your decision. Analysis Question # 4
