Civics and Economics Have you ever been left without adult supervision or knew someone who was?

Direct Democracy and Government Power The following activity will explore the concepts of colonization, salutary neglect, government power (where does it come from?), popular sovereignty, and democracy.

Welcome to Mars Your class has been selected to colonize Mars. Once on Mars, the United States government will be adopting a policy of “salutary neglect”. This means that they are leaving us to govern ourselves. We will have to come up with our own rules.

Why do we need rules? In a moment we will break into Table Groups You will create a list of five rules that you think we would need to follow. You need Group recorder (writes down rules) Group mediator (makes sure everyone inputs) Group presenter (answers my questions at the end) You have 5 minutes… GO!

Create a class list of rules

Now that we have some rules… Who will enforce them? How will they get their authority? How will these rules will be enforced? What will be the punishment for breaking rules?

Terms Monarchy Salutary Neglect Type of “Autocracy” one person has all the power. King, queen, What ever the royal title, your in power because your parents were. Salutary Neglect Neglected, left alone, unsupervised, on your own

Popular Sovereignty: Democracy Social Contract The people are in charge Democracy When the people have the power. Popular Sovereignty is a characteristic of democracy. Social Contract The people give government permission to be in charge in return for protection.

Terms Types of Democracies Direct Democracy Representative Democracy People make all the choices themselves, personally Representative Democracy You pick someone to make the choices for you. What type did you form on Mars?
