Presentation transcript:

Analysis of Design Brief I am going to design and manufacture a bedroom light that is suitable for children between the ages of 2 to 7 years old. The light will change colour automatically and there will also be a facility to reduce the intensity of light it emits. There will also be a timer to turn of the light automatically after a set period of time. It will be aesthetically pleasing and made from a variety of materials that will be able to be recycled at a future date . It will conform to all safety standards and will have a low energy consumption. This product is designed for children, therefore it is very important to design a questionnaire that investigates parents preferences with regards to size, colour, material and operating mechanism. It is also important to research the materials available and cost. Sustainability, is also important and the option to manufacture this product from sustainable materials or materials that can be recycled should be investigated With any electrical device it is very important to research the safety requirements (legislation) with regards to night lights for children. Symbols and BS kite marks should also be explored which are used to indicate that the a product is safe to use. There are various ways to operate a nightlight. A simple on/off switch or a dimmer switch. The cost and availability of an automatic timer should also be investigated. The option of a low wattage bulb would make this nightlight low energy consumption, but the use of LED’s would reduce the energy consumption even further. Whether LED’s would provide enough light would need to be investigated before a decision is made. Researching existing products is one of the best ways to get ideas and se what else is on the market. Several products should be investigated including old and modern designs (highlighting good and bad features). Product Analysis is an excellent way to see how a nightlight is manufactured. It will highlight specific detail and probably raise some questions about the final design. Ergonomics and anthropometrics are normally considered in detail for items that are held or used as furniture, but some features of night lights do require some thought (eg the ease at which the light can be turned on or adjusted) The tools and equipment used for the manufacturing process also need to be researched. Are they available and do you know how to operate them safely.
