Building Information Modelling Revit Structure 2015 Building Information Modelling October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Information Modelling What is BIM? - BIM is not just software but a methodology of practice. - BIM means all project data is stored in one location a building information model is the ultimate compilation of construction and design information, housed in a database and graphically represented October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Information Modelling BIM as a promise to offer a high quality project as well as time and cost savings. The ability to visualize the facility as a 3D model helps owners to gain a better understanding, early in the design process of the look of their final project. Software for BIM .. Revit, Tekla, ArchiCad……. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Structures Modeling Conception Modeling Analysis Design Detailing Drafting Costing October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Structure, Member, Element Structure can considered as an assemblage of “Physical Components” called Members Slabs, Beams, Columns, Footings, etc. Physical Members can be modeled by using one or more “Conceptual Components” called Elements 1D elements, 2D element, 3D elements Frame element, plate element, shell element, solid element, etc. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Structure, Member, Element The vertical Load The structural system (beams, slab, girders, columns, etc) that act primarily to support the gravity or vertical loads The Lateral Load The structural system (columns, shear walls, bracing, etc) that primarily acts to resist the lateral loads October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Create Structural Model Need for Modeling Create Structural Model Real Structure cannot be Analyzed: It can only be "Load Tested” to determine response (S. Fig 1) We can only analyze a “Model” of the Structure We therefore need tools to Model the Structureand to Analyze the Model October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Need for Modeling October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Structure 2015 (BIM) Revit is a design and documentation platform that supports the design, drawings, and schedules required for building information modeling (BIM). In the Revit model, every drawing sheet, 2D and 3D view, and schedule is a presentation of information from the same underlying building model database. The Revit parametric change engine automatically coordinates changes made anywhere—in model views, drawing sheets, schedules, sections, and plans. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Information Modeling Parametric modeling refers to the relationships among all elements in a project that enable the coordination and change management that Revit provides. These relationships are created either automatically by the software or by you as you work. Revit uses 3 types of elements in projects: model elements, datum elements, and view-specific elements. Model elements represent the actual 3D geometry of the building. They display in relevant views of the model. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Information Modeling Model elements represent the actual 3D geometry of the building. They display in relevant views of the model. Examples: Structural walls, slabs, and ramp Datum elements help to define project context. For example, levels and reference planes are datum elements. View-specific elements display only in the views in which they are placed. They help to describe or document the model. For example, dimensions are view-specific elements. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Information Modeling October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Information Modeling Each element you place in a drawing is an instance of a family type. Elements have 2 sets of properties that control their appearance and behavior: type properties and instance properties. For Example: cross-sectional dimensions of a beam are type properties, if you select a beam, and change one of its instance property values on the Properties palette, only that beam is affected. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Building Information Modeling Revit Terminology: Most terms used to identify objects in Revit are common Project Level Element Category Family October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Structure 2015 Project: In Revit, the project is the single database of information for your design—the building information model. The project file contains all information for the building design, from geometry to construction data. This information includes components used to design the model, views of the project, and drawings of the design. (plan views, elevation views, section views, schedules, and so forth) October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Structure 2015 Level : Levels are infinite horizontal planes that act as a reference for level-hosted elements, such as roofs, floors, and ceilings. Most often, you use levels to define a vertical height or story within a building. You create a level for each known story or other needed reference of the building; for example, first floor, top of wall, or bottom of foundation. To place levels, you must be in a section or elevation view. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Structure 2015 October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Structure 2015 Element: When creating a project, you add parametric building elements to the design. Revit classifies elements by categories, families, and types. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Structure 2015 Category: A category is a group of elements that you use to model or document a building design. Examples Categories of model elements: - walls, beams Categories of model elements - Categories of annotation elements: tags, text notes October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

User Interface October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

User Interface 1 Application Menu 2 Quick Access Toolbar 3 InfoCenter 4 Options Bar 5 Type Selector 6 Properties Palette 7 Project Browser 8 Status Bar 9 View Control Bar 10 Drawing Area 11 Ribbon 12 Tabs on the ribbon 13 A contextual tab on the ribbon, providing tools relevant to the selected object or current action 14 Tools on the current tab of the ribbon 15 Panels on the ribbon October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Model the Design Preliminary Design • Levels: Use the Level tool to define a vertical height or story within a building. You create a level for each known story or other needed reference of the building (for example, first floor, top of wall, or bottom of foundation). • Grids: Use the Grid tool to place column grid lines in the building design. Grids can be straight lines, arcs or multi-segmented. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Grid October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Structural Modeling Structural Modeling : Add structural elements to the building model. - Structural Columns :Use the structural column tools to add vertical load-bearing elements to building models. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Beams Beams: Use beams tools to add load-bearing structural elements to building models. - Beam Systems: Use beam system tools to add a single structural framing element that contains a series of individual beams placed in parallel to a building model. Braces: Use brace tools to add diagonal members that are connected to beams and columns. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Beams October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Trusses Use the Truss tool to add a truss to your building model according to the layout and other parameters specified in the selected truss family type. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Opening to a Structural Framing Add an Opening to a Structural Framing Element To cut an opening in a structural element 1. On the ribbon, click Opening By Face. Where is it? 2. Select the desired plane of the member to which you want to add an opening. 3. Using the Draw panel sketching tools, sketch the opening on the structural element 4. On the ribbon, click Mode panel Finish Edit Mode October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Opening to a Structural Framing October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Structural Stiffener to an Opening Add a Structural Stiffener to an Opening - Use stiffeners to strengthen steel framing members, especially beams and columns in which there are openings. - Stiffeners are modeled as Revit loadable families that represent the additional steel reinforcing material. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Openings October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Structural Walls Create a Shear, Bearing, or Structural combined structural wall. Wall Foundations Isolated Foundations October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Structural Floors Use the structural floor tool to add structural floors to a building model. You create structural floors by defining their boundaries, either by picking walls or using drawing tools. Create a structural floor by selecting support framing, walls, or by sketching the extent of the floor. Use openings to allow for shafts and ramps between levels. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Structural Floors October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Families Revit Families: A family is a group of elements with a common set of properties, called parameters, and a related graphical representation. Use the Family Editor to modify existing elements or create new ones to meet the specific needs of a project. All of the elements that you add to your Revit projects are created with families. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Revit Families System Families: System families contain family types that you use to create basic building elements such as : walls, floors, ceilings, and stairs in your building models. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Assemblies Revit elements The Assemblies category of Revit elements supports construction workflows by letting you identify, classify, quantify, and document unique element combinations in the model. You can combine any number of model elements to create an assembly, which can then be edited, tagged, scheduled, and filtered. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Assemblies Revit elements Which elements can be included in assemblies? Most model elements (walls, floors, roofs, family instances, parts, and so on) can be included in assemblies. The following elements cannot be included: Annotations and detail items Assemblies and elements that are already part of another assembly October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Assemblies Revit elements Complex structures (trusses, beam systems, curtain systems, curtain walls, stacked walls) Elements in different design options You can create assembly views and assembly sheets for an assembly type. These drawings are always associated with a particular instance of the type, and only one instance of a type can have assembly views. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Assemblies Revit elements Combine multiple building elements into a single assembly October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Design Options Design Options: Use design options to explore alternative designs in the building model. You can develop multiple options for different parts of the model, all within the same project. For example, you can use design options to consider different roof styles and different front entries in the same building model. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Design Options Workflow: Design Options : Use this process to develop sets of design options for your building model. In general, the process of using design options is as follows: Decide on the areas for which you want to develop design options. Create the building model, including all elements that will be common to all of the design options. (This is the main model.) October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Design Options Create secondary options for each design option set. Create views that display each design option. Incorporate a design option into the main model. A design option set is a collection of possible solutions for a particular design problem. Each design option set contains one primary option and one or more secondary options. October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad

Document and Present the Design Project Views …… different views Project Phasing ……. apply phase filters to views and schedules to show the project during various stages of work. Annotation … construction documents with dimensions, text notes, Detailing …. Create detail views and drafting views. Export …. Export selected views and sheets or the entire building model to convert the information to different formats for use with other software. Print October-2014 Dr. Walid Al-Awad
