Math I Parent/Student Night Thursday, August 18th William Lenoir Middle School

Math I (formerly Algebra I) Counts as one high school math credit, but does not factor into HS GPA Students take Math I EOC and the 8th grade EOG (Math I is last week of school) EOC counts as 20% of final course grade Challenging work—grades may be lower than in the past Use of TI-84 graphing calculator—will be assigned to each student

Math I & 8th grade Math BOTH include: Functions Slope and linear equations Transformations Pythagorean Theorem Systems of equations Laws of exponents

8th Grade math topics that are taught in addition to Math I curriculum: Scientific Notation Angle Relationships Dilations and Transformations (Congruency and Similarity) Two-Way Tables Scatterplots

What will my child need? Binder/notebook for class activities/notes/homework Loose leaf paper and graph paper Glue sticks and/or clear tape Calculators will be available for student use for the year. Students will need AAA batteries (4-pack).

What if my child begins to struggle? Some degree of difficulty is expected. The pace will be much faster than in past math classes. Teacher will contact parents within the first 20 days of class. A county-wide assessment will be conducted on Day 15. Students must be willing to think, share problem- solving strategies, complete learning tasks, and ask for help. If absent or confused, schedule a time to meet with teacher during planning time or after school.

Other notes and paperwork All Math I students will be assigned to our homerooms. This will maximize our time for instruction by eliminating transition time and allowing more time in class. Return completed forms to Mrs. Jolley or Mrs. McMenemy Open House is Wednesday, Aug. 24th from 5-6:30PM. (Sessions are set. It is not drop-in). School starts Monday, August 29, 2016. 
